Lucha Underground: Life After Death

March 16, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Catrina admits that she desires Fenix’s powers, as she’s apparently dead and they could give her life. Fenix takes her hand and she wonders if she should have sided with him instead of turning back to Mil Muertes. They smooch, she cries, and then says Muertes will destroy Fenix tonight and in doing so he’ll bring her back from the dead. I don’t remember her dying in-story.

Ivelisse, Son of Havoc & Angelico def. Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte & Trece {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Match}
The good guys would have been out of LU forever had they lost. But they didn’t lose, and now they’re the champs again. This was pretty much designed to do the work of recharging Ivelisse and her men while crowning them champs again. They ran the table on the Disciples of Death (in entertaining fashion) and won the titles when Havoc hit Negro with a 450 Splash at 4:55. ***

Johnny Mundo interrupts Prince Puma’s workout. He says Aztec Warfare will go differently this year than it did last year, because it’s his time to be champ. Puma punches through a heavy bag in frustration. Meanwhile, Rey Mysterio gives Dragon Azteca some tequila and an invitation to Aztec Warfare at the Temple. Mysterio got an invitation too, so they’ll both be there. Dope.

Texano def. Chavo Guerrero {Bullrope Match}
The Crew won’t fight for Guerrero here, despite his demands. This was better than it would have been without the rope or the no disqualification stipulation, but even with those things it wasn’t much more than a revenge squash for Texano. That said, I do like watching Guerrero get beat up. Texano won with a sit out powerbomb at 6:04. **½

Muertes beats up Negro, but Catrina stops the champ from killing him. At the New Temple, Black Lotus and Dario Cueto listen as Matanza Cueto kills people inside. Dario says it’s time to take back the real Temple. We see a blood-covered Matanza for the first time, and he basically looks like Jason X. Then, they announce that Aztec Warfare this year will be for a shot at the title, rather than a match for the title itself. They don’t say if it’s for the Gift of the Gods Championship.

Fenix def. Mil Muertes {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
Well this really performed beyond my expectations. I wasn’t as thrilled with their season one rematch as I was with the casket match, and it turns out it’s because this was really the rematch we were waiting for. Once again, Muertes bloodied Fenix and ripped up his mask. But this time Fenix returned the favor and fought back like an animal. The action was brutal and tightly-paced. Muertes made desperate moans as he tried to make his final comeback, but Fenix cut him off at every turn. This is my favorite Lucha Underground match so far. Fenix countered the Flatliner to a roll up at 13:39 for the win and the title. A spiteful Catrina tells Fenix that he will enter Aztec Warfare at number one and defend his newly won title. Muertes will enter last. ****½
