Lucha Underground: Gift of the Gods Ladder Match

March 2, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Mil Muertes is mad at Catrina for not letting anyone fight him while injured. He wishes he’d have sent them into the darkness weeks ago. He tries to force her to grant a match against Pentagon and Prince Puma, but she teleports away. Muertes isn’t on his throne when the show begins.

Kobra Moon def. Sexy Star
This was pretty fun while it lasted. In the end, Marty Martinez shows up in the crowd and demoralizes Star enough that she taps out to Moon’s dragon sleeper at 2:59. **¼

Uh oh, the random luchadors are back. This time they’re invading Famous B’s commercial, but he comically puts them down. They didn’t Get Fame, but you can! El Dragon Azteca was watching the commercial, but Rey Mysterio furiously turns it off so they can train.

Pentagon nc. Prince Puma
This was going along nicely when Meurtes ran in and got the match thrown out at 4:56. They structured the match to peak when Muertes interfered, so at least we didn’t have to sit through five minutes of warm-up for a non-finish. Muertes ripped off his sling and beat up both guys. He tells Catrina he’ll be defending the title against both of them next week. ***

They announce that Aztec Warfare will return in three weeks.

Fenix def. King Cuerno {Gift of the Gods Championship Ladder Match}
These two spent a ton of time setting up spots that rehashed their Last Luchador Standing match, and it did this match exactly zero favors. It just felt like slow, plodding rehash of a match that wasn’t that great to begin with. Once they stopped dicking around and brought the action into the ring things picked up, but this was a prime example of a ladder match in which they almost never tried to actually win the thing. There was a cool bit where they went for the title and both hung from the apparatus that held the belt, but beyond that this was a real bummer. Fenix got the title at 16:41. I like that Fenix has now had to essentially win his contendership on three occasions before getting a title shot, but the matches that got us there have been disappointing in season 2. **½
