March 30, 2016 – Los Angeles, California
Dario Cueto is back in control, and his first announcement is that he’s doing another trios tournament starting next week. Pentagon interrupts him just as he’s about to announce his idea for finding a contender for his brother’s title. Cueto won’t give Pentagon a title shot, so Pentagon threatens to break his arm. Cueto gives him the shot.
Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco def. Johnny Mundo & Taya
This is sort of strange to book for no reason unless we’re just meant to accept that Mundo & Taya are a permanent duo now. It was going along just fine (although not particularly memorably) when Cage enters the arena and things grind to a halt. The Crew hits the Psycho Realm (the Shatter Machine) on Taya for the win out of nowhere at 4:30. Cage never touches Mundo or Taya. **¼
Marty Martinez talks about the wealthy moth Aztec tribe. He says he’s still quite wealthy. They stopped the other tribes from taking their fortune by using Mariposa to stop them. Meanwhile, Mariposa beats up generic luchadors in suits. The Mariposa mask has been passed down for generations, and Martinez says his sister is the deadliest Mariposa of all. In a nice touch, we see that the book Martinez is reading from has nothing but blank pages in it, so he’s just a nut. Meanwhile, Catrina approaches Dario Cueto and wants a rematch for Mil Muertes. He gave the Disciples of Death a rematch for the trios titles so he thinks they should be allies. She’s not on the same page.
Angelico, Ivelisse & Son Of Havoc def Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte & Trece {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Elimination Match}
The eliminations came pretty quick after a fast-paced first few minutes. Ivelisse went out first, then Trece. Muerte took out Angelico, leaving Havoc on his own. Havoc looked to be having a lot of fun taking on two guys at once, and a descending stair double stomp eliminated Negro. Ivelisse took out an interfering Catrina. Havon hits a shooting star press for the win at 9:26. This was a good time at the matches. ***½
Cueto welcomes Mysterio to his office. Cueto’s name plate now says “Kind of a Big Deal.” Mysterio is in Lucha Underground to find out why El Dragon Azteca the first died after coming into the Temple. Mysterio thinks Matanza Cueto did it. Cueto swears that his brother had nothing to do with it, which is a clever and technically true pivot. Cueto wants Mysterio to leave the past in the past, and in return he’ll put him and the new Dragon Azteca in the trios tournament. Mysterio toasts to that.
Mariposa def. Sexy Star
They’re really underplaying the whole Martinez-family-kidnapped-Star thing. Mariposa hits the Butterfly Effect (Vertebreaker) for the win at 1:25. After the match, Martinez and Mariposa attack the Mack. *
Matanza Cueto def. Pentagon {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
Before the match, Dario told Matanza to break Pentagon’s back so that he’d never return. Matanza no-sold all of Pentagon’s offense here, popping up to his feet after taking a lungblower. He hits the reverse powerslam, which he calls the Wrath of the Gods, for the win at 3:59. This was a total squash. Vampiro goes to check on Pentagon after the match and gets laid out. Pentagon gets put through a table and taken out on a stretcher. **
