History of the New South Championship

New South, despite most of their early catalogue and first half a dozen title changes not being available, is part of the IWTV family and one of the more consistent wrestling indies streaming today. So they’re in the rotation now. Odinson won the inaugural title match by beating Black Baron, Chrisjen Hayme and Colin Delaney in August of 2016. Black changed his name to Baron Black (good move) and won the title ten months later. Sugar Dunkerton beat him for it seven months after that, but lost it back after just one month. After a six month reign, Jonathan Gresham won the title.

I need to mention, even though I’ve already said it elsewhere, that this title belt is comically huge and everyone who wears it looks like they’re being pranked. Gresham is not a big guy, so it goes double for him.

Tyler Matrix def. Jonathan Gresham {New South Championship Match}
From the HOSS Tournament. Matrix used a Money in the Bank-style briefcase to earn this title shot. For everyone who complains that movies and TV shows are too alike, look no further than a contender briefcase in wrestling to see that every medium in entertainment is creatively bankrupt. This was all pretty great until the finish. Matrix had to fight from behind while Gresham targeted his leg through the match. There were counters here that I’ve never seen before, or seen so rarely that they seem new to me. Either way, they were cool and I liked them. What I didn’t like was Gresham’s cronies pulling the referee to save him from a three count, only for Matrix to immediately pin him with an ushigoroshi (which used the injured leg offensively) at 20:35. That took me way out of a match that I had previously been very engrossed in. Matrix lost the title four months later to Cabana Man Dan in a match that isn’t on IWTV. I don’t understand why a company wouldn’t put all of their back catalogue on IWTV immediately. It’s free money, basically, and it’s not like you’re selling it anywhere else. ***½

Derek Neal def. Cabana Man Dan {New South Championship Match}
From the 5th Anniversary Show. This is shortly after New South returned from their three-month pandemic hiatus. Being that they’re in Alabama, I’m surprised they took a hiatus at all. Dan reminds me a lot of Antonio Honda. I am no fan of Neal. I watched a few of his 2021 title matches before getting into the older stuff and I did not care for any of it. The commentary is awful. It was clearly recorded after the fact. What makes it clear? The commentator sounded like he was in a closet trying not to wake up anyone else in his house. I’d rather have no commentary than a guy speaking so softly while wrestling is happening. On the bright side, the match is actually pretty good. Dan carried the whole thing, bouncing off of Neal and finding creative ways to gain control over his much larger opponent. All Neal had to do was be big and not screw up, and that’s what he did. I appreciate him for that, and Dan for being able to make this exciting. A ref bump saw Dan miss his chance at the win after a Shiranui, and Neal came back with the Dude Buster for the win at 17:38. ***¼

Donnie Janela def. Derek Neal {New South Championship Match}
From Action Clash 5. Neal and his cronies beat up Janela before the match. Then they had a contest that was pretty damn boring. Neal’s crew got involved again, but their interference was botched and Janela hit a spinning slap (so dumb) for the win at 14:18. This was basically nothing. **

Derek Neal def. Donnie Janela {New South Championship Leather Strap Match}
From the Saga Continues. Can’t say I’m looking forward to this after Janela’s title win, but New South has surprised me before. Commentator Dump Sanders looks like Hurley from LOST, which is a vibe I’m into. This is touch-the-corners rules, which is a vibe I’m not into. This match had a ref bump, which I initially felt was silly because the only rule is to stay connect by the strap, but then they used the time without the ref to do things that they could only do unstrapped. I dig that. It didn’t lead to anything, but it was an oasis of fun in an otherwise uneventful match. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t much. Neal rather casually hit the Dude Buster and then touched all four corners for the win at 19:27. **¾
