Finn Balor def. Adam Cole {NXT Championship Match}
It’s cool that this is opening the show, as it gives the impression that this is indeed the overtime from last week’s main event. This is the second time that an NXT Championship match between these two opened an episode of this show while a Rhea Ripley match main evented. Last time, they suspended commercials during the match. This time they didn’t because there’s no competition from AEW to keep people from switching to. Like most things in 2020, this didn’t quite measure up to it’s 2019 counterpart. It was good, but the commercial breaks made it hard to lock in. Also, Cole kicked out of the Coup de Gras and the commentators made it out to be a huge deal, but moments later Cole was totally fine. I guess I could chalk that up to Balor’s leg being worked over. Balor’s selling was terrific though, and that might be enough for me to overlook some of this match’s faults. Balor hit an avalanche 1916 for the win and the title at 17:05 (shown of 23:10). ****
Cole congratulates Balor backstage and gives him a Bullet Club salute. Then, Robert Stone tries to vandalize Shotzi Blackheart’s tank. Blackheart catches and attacks him. Aliyah attacks her, but in doing so they tumble into Io Shirai’s photo shoot. Shirai and Blackheart chase Aliyah to the ring and beat her and Stone up. Then Shotzi tells Shirai that she wants a shot at the title. They’ll fight in a non-title match next week. Then, Candice LeRae tells Johnny Gargano to be nice to Tegan Nox when she comes over. He’s nice in his own shitty guy way when he lets Nox in. Tegan isn’t comfortable chatting while Gargano is there. Then, Timothy Thatcher shows his class footage of Damian Priest. He talks about Priest’s weaknesses. I liked this evolution of these segments, but now I need to see Thatcher actually exploit these weaknesses in their match. That match is happening next week.
Velveteen Dream def. Ashante Adonis
This was a squash, but an energetic one. Kushida attacks Dream after the match. He wrecks Dream’s shoulder against the post. It’s about time they found something to do for Kushida, and if they’re going to insist on using Dream they might as well use him to put other people over. N/A
Breezango likes the smell of success that they’ve found on the tag title belts. Imperium thinks they’re a disgrace. Breezango thinks Imperium is boring. Imperium gets a rematch next Wednesday. Meanwhile, Gargano takes a hint and takes his dinner upstairs. There’s some recurring joke here about a pizza delivery prank that I don’t remember being on NXT TV (I googled it, Nox was a pizza delivery person in Mia Yim & Keith Lee’s spoof of the Dinner with the Garganos skits over three months ago. Not surprised I didn’t remember but I’m not mad at the nod to continuity). Nox and LeRae disagree about the merits of the Gargano Way. LeRae says she’s never steered Nox wrong before, so why would the Gargano Way be any different?
Bronson Reed def. Austin Theory
Dream and Theory on the same episode. Yikes. I was hoping Reed would wear an homage to the NJPW-era Vader gear he sort of teased on Twitter this week, but instead he’s leaning into his new “colossal” tag. I guess the stripe on it is where the V on Vader’s Vader Time singlet was. Theory bumped around like crazy for Reed here. I liked the simple story which saw the cocky Theory bite off more than he could chew, try too much against Reed, and then pay for it. Reed hit the Tsunami for the win at 7:16 (shown of 10:51). ***
Cole is disappointed that he didn’t win but admits that the better man won. He respects Balor, but he’ll win if they ever meet again. This episode did more to turn Cole babyface than any of the Pat McAfee stuff.
Killian Dain def. Roderick Strong
The commentators seem super confused during this match. First, Wade Barrett speaks as if Cole won the opening title match. Then, Beth Phoenix misunderstands what the phrase, “with friends like these who needs enemies,” means when she talks about Fish being at ringside to help Strong. This was spirited, but super short and the finish sucked. Fish distracted Dain and Strong hit him with a high knee for the win at 4:04 (shown of 7:35). Drake Maverick runs out holding a pipe to save Dain from a post-match beating. He can’t get it done, but Dain gets the pipe and scares Strong & Fish off. Maverick wants a handshake, so Dain knocks him out again. Saw this coming a mile away, but I still like the idea of Maverick and Dain together. **¼
Just when it seems like LeRae and Nox might be on the same page, they can’t agree on who will face Shirai for the title and the whole thing turns into a food fight. LeRae throws something at Nox but it misses and takes out the TV. And that’s no $200 plasma. I appreciate how similar the ending to this was to the ending of The Office Dinner Party. I’m reaching, but I don’t care.
Rhea Ripley def. Mercedes Martinez {Cage Match}
Okay, this ruled. It was a great brawl between two scary women who just wanted to beat the crap out of each other. They threw big bombs at each other, giving the match an awesome balance. Robert Stone also performs his role so well, acting like a nuisance before being made to look like a goof. The image of him draped over the top of the cage after Ripley knocked him out was great. I really enjoyed this. Ripley won with an avalanche Riptide through a table at 11:53 (shown of 14:23). I could have used a little more of this. ****
Great episode this week. Flew by and made me want to see what will happen next. They booked some interesting matches for next week too. Looks like they about matched the 12/18/19 episode.
