Sarray def. Mandy Rose
The last time Rose wrestled on NXT was one month shy of five years ago. I was surprised that she was able to look like someone who belonged in the ring with Sarray, in large part because she’s in such great shape. The commentators filled the gaps in the match, of which there were a couple. Sarray hit the basement dropkick, and then Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne took a seemingly hurt Rose to the back. Sarray won by count out at 6:48. What a weird match. *¾
Kyle O’Reilly def. Duke Hudson
This was taped a week ago, and I have to wonder if it was live if they’d acknowledge that O’Reilly was listed as “Kevin O’Reilly” all day on social media. I wasn’t feeling this until after the commercial break, but at that point they put on a good show. Hudson did a good job keeping O’Reilly from taking control by doing big guy things as well as by targeting the injured ribs. But when O’Reilly found an opening it was over for Hudson. He picked apart the big guy’s legs and then made him tap to a heel hook at 8:21 (shown of 11:54). ***¼
Ilya Dragunov comes out for a chatski. He wonders who will be willing to go through hell to take the NXT UK title from him. This was a low key ad for NXT UK, but it would have been more effective if they reiterated where you can watch it.
Kay Lee Ray is rudely interrupted by the man interviewing her. What kinda crap is that? KLR says she’s in NXT because nobody else can bear Raquel Gonzalez. Then, Carmelo Hayes lists all the champions he might challenge. Elektra Lopez interrupts and tells him to leave the North American Champion to Stanos Escobar. Escobar reiterates the point. I don’t know if I believe that Escobar vs. Swerve is ever going to happen.
Marcel Barthes & Fabian Aichner def. Drake Maverick & Grayson Waller
Now, Maverick is the serious one in his new goofy tag team. I have no patience for them running back the same gimmick with the little guy being level-headed this time. Waller gets hit with the European Bomb and loses it for his team at 3:08. Whatever. *½
Indi Hartwell is still trying to get Johnny Gargano to give Dexter Lumis a chance. Gargano is theoretically open to it if Lumis can just be normal. Then, the British guys threaten MSK and Tommaso Ciampa again. Moments ago, Dolin & Jayne beat up Sarray.
LA Knight def. Johnny Gargano
Gargano’s frustrated acceptance of InDex is cute. I like how all the big matches tonight are the result of last week’s NXT Championship segment. This turned into a nice little heater of a match. The bit at the end where Lumis’s affection caused Gargano the match was too predictable, but I get why they did it. Knight hit the BFT on a distracted Gargano for the win at 11:29 (shown of 14:02). ***
MSK ask Regal for a title match against the former tag champs who they never beat because of Danny Burch’s injury. Regal will do it because they asked, though he was tempted to punish the bald boys for their bad behavior by not allowing the match. Then, we learn Mei Ying debuts next week.
Raquel Gonzales def. Jessi Kamea
Kamea got a bit of token offense in, but this was very squishy. Gonzales hit the Chingona Bomb for the win at 2:44. Frankie Monet stared down the champ after the match ¾*
Ember Moon wants to fight KLR. The promo is cringey and nonsensical, as usual for Moon. Samoa Joe tells Stu Bennett that he wants to set precedents as champion. Sorry, he said it to Wade Barrett, they just called him Bennett on social media today because that team is a mess. Then he says stuff that’s similar to what Dragunov said earlier about people challenging him, but in more of a mentor sort of way.
Roderick Strong def. Ikemen Jiro
Diamond Mine now includes the Creed brothers. The taller one looks like that dude from Obvious Child and White Lotus and the final season of the Office. Plop. Jiro has his own face printed all over his jacket. This was squishy too. Strong hit two suplex backbreakers for the win at 4:58. It kinda felt like Jiro kicked out of the first one when he wasn’t supposed to. **
The KCs get a tag title shot tomorrow. They make fun of how the champs aren’t friends with each other. Zoey Stark says she’d take a bullet for Io Shirai, but Shirai responds by saying she doesn’t like Stark. Is Stark’s simping supposed to get her over? Personally, I like her a lot less than I did before she teamed with Shirai. Then, the Grizzled Young Veterans offer Cameron Grimes another Million Dollar Championship replica as a rib. He drops it on Zack Gibson’s foot.
Tommaso Ciampa def. Ridge Holland
So much for the big Holland push. Ciampa beat him clean as a sheet at 9:33 (shown of 12:03) with Willow’s Bell. The match was solid, but they completely lost the crowd going into the finish. Maybe it’s for the best that Holland lost because the fans showed they didn’t care about him at all. MSK came out to stare down their challengers after the match. **¾
