August 24, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
It looks like the predicted Threeboot will actually be more of a slow burn tweaking than an abrupt rebooting of the brand. I was kind of hoping for an exit ramp, but I’ll ride this out for a while longer while it makes sense to do so.
Cameron Grimes and Ted DiBiase come out to celebrate the title win. DiBiase admits he was testing Grimes when he was harassing him months ago, wanting to know if he had a strong heart. Grimes realizes that he’d lost sight of his goals when he was out spending his money and even still while he was LA Knight’s butler. But the risk of allowing DiBiase to be the butler put him on the path to glory. Nobody interrupts so they just launch money into the crowd.
Ridge Holland def. Timothy Thatcher
This didn’t work. Holland’s strikes were glaringly lacking in the face of Thatcher’s good striking. He looked more lost out there than I’ve ever seen him look before. The match ended very suddenly at 7:04 (shown of 10:37) when Holland hit the Northern Grit out of nowhere. Danny Burch returns after the match and, along with Oney Lorcan, beats up Tommaso Ciampa. Dunne and Holland beat up Thatcher. *¾
Carmello Hayes is interviewed in a sit down situation, but because this is NXT he says nothing of note. Same goes for his opponent tonight, Odyssey Jones. Then Indi Hartwell & Dexter Lumis reveal their wedding will happen on TV in three weeks. Later, Frankie Monet tells Raquel Gonzalez that she’s coming for the title. That’s followed immediately by a Kay Lee Ray video.
Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter def. Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne
This match is happening because Dolin & Jayne bagged on the KCs challenging for the tag titles on TikTok. It was ugly as hell. It was slow and sloppy. The commentary was bad too, with Vic Joseph saying things like a win for the KCs would be a big deal. How? They’ve been a team for way longer than Dolin & Jayne and have actually won matches before. The KCs win in 4:05 with their now-standard-but-unnamed combo. They yell at the commentators after the match. Why? Later on, Mandy Rose uses the loss to recruit Dolin & Jayne. ¾*
Kay Lee Ray def. Valentina Feroz
Feroz never got her name on the screen, but she did get to mug for the camera in her headdress. This was the kind of squash I like, where Feroz got a bit of offense but KLR sold none of it. Plus it was short and plus KLR looked vicious. Good stuff. KLR hit the Gory Bomb for the win at 2:52. N/A
Samoa Joe comes out for a chat. He wants a new challenger. Pete Dunne comes out first because they’ve been teasing that match for weeks. LA Knight is out next, but Dunne threatens to break all of his fingers. Kyle O’Reilly joins the party and addresses everyone by their full Christian names. He rightly mentions that nobody wants to see Knight get the shot. Holland attacks O’Reilly and saves Dunne from an attack by Ciampa. Knight tries to attack Joe and gets wiped out. They tease a Joe & Ciampa vs. Dunne & Holland match, but the newly taped nature of this show has told us that isn’t going to happen. Actually, maybe they were teasing Joe vs. Ciampa, which I’d watch.
In the parking lot, Grimes tries to give the Million Dollar Championship back to DiBiase, but the Million Dollar Man gives it back to him. Wait, no, he gave back a replica title belt. So the title has been put on ice once again. That’s good, it had served its purpose and there are already too many championships. Then, O’Reilly gets into a fight with Duke Hudson in the back.
Carmelo Hayes def. Odyssey Jones {Number One Contender Match}
It came up a bit in the interviews earlier, but it’s been largely glossed over that the winner of this tournament gets any title shot he wants. William Regal sits at ringside with the contract for said match. Given the rumored changes coming, I’m surprised at the result here. Hayes is better than Jones, but Jones is the guy the company is doubtless more excited about. Either way, this match was fun. It didn’t blow minds or anything, but Jones got to look powerful while Hayes clearly won with this experience and agility. I like when things make sense. Hayes got a surprise crucifix pin for the win at 7:24 (shown of 10:33). Overall, I’d call the tournament a massive disappointment, but thankfully not a total disaster. ***
The Brits + Lorcan threaten Joe, Ciampa, and the tag champs. Also, Ilja Dragunov will be back next week. But why though? Shouldn’t be be headlining on Thursdays? Later, Johnny Gargano and Knight both get kicked out of Regal’s office for screaming about their respective grievances. They’ll fight each other next week. That is a massively dumb excuse to have a match.
Xyon Quinn def. Boa
I have no interest in Quinn. This match is nothing. Boa is distracted by Mei Ying motioning at him and Quinn hits a running forearm for the win at 1:11. Imagine you’re Karen Q, and for however many months your career is sitting in a chair and causing the people on your team to perform poorly. This angle has sucked. More interesting, the commentators say that Thatcher has been injured and will be out long enough for Ciampa to get a little singles run. N/A
Stokely Hathaway reveals Roderick Strong training the Kreed Brothers, his new prospects. Strong will put out an open challenge next week. Also, Ciampa will fight Holland.
Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza def. Isaiah Scott, Top Dolla & Ashante Adonis
What a fun match! Dolla was the standout, which makes sense as he’s the only non-cruiserweight in the bunch. Importantly, it looked like everyone was having fun out there. Hit Row had things in the bag, but when B-Fab attacked Escobar, Elektra Lopez came out. She attacked B-Fab, caused awkwardness between Scott and the referee, and handed Escobar a roll up win at 11:12 (shown of 13:58). Neat. ***¼
