August 18, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
Ilja Dragunov def. Roderick Strong
Kushida caught the bug, so this match was the result of a subsequent open challenge from Strong. There’s no consistency in wrestling, in this case exemplified by Strong not becoming Cruiserweight Champion by forfeit. These two hit each other real hard and the match had an actual finish, so I’m happy. But it was also damn short given who was involved, so I’m feeling more medium. Dragunov hit a bloody Torpedo Moskau for the win at 8:33 (shown). Dragunov calls out WALTER but gets no response. Later, Malcolm Bivens says the match doesn’t count because Dragunov is a heavyweight, and that Strong is still owed a title shot. ***¼
For the umpteenth time, Hit Row comes out on top in a skirmish with Legado del Fantasma. Then, we find WALTER is focusing on tonight’s tag title match rather than fighting with Dragunov. Later, the Garganos are grossed out by Indi Hartwell’s relationship with Dexter Lumis. Johnny Gargano’s reactions are the only thing keeping this from making me want to die of embarrassment. Later still, Io Shirai tells Zoey Stark that they don’t need to be friends, they just need to defend the titles. But they never defend the titles, and these skits have made Stark look like a dork.
Cameron Grimes def. Josh Briggs
LA Knight paid Briggs to fight Grimes. Grimes wins the match in his butler outfit at 2:09. Knight attacks him after the fact. *
Indi Hartwell & Dexter Lumis def. Robert Stone & Jessi Kamea
This was set up by a photoshop dating app angle that only played out online. It was referenced by the commentators, but not shown on TV. Hartwell is taking on Lumis’s mannerisms and wearing matching gloves. Hartwell gets a happy birthday chant from the crowd. This was a very basic, house show-style match with a bit of comedy thrown in. Hartwell made Kamea tap to the Silence at 6:02 (shown). Hartwell proposes to Lumis after the match. **
Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai do dueling promos over a split screen. It’s not interesting. Later, Jacy Jayne gets a promo to compliments Gigi Dolin’s from last week. Then, Ted DiBiase apologizes for everything that’s happened to Grimes, but Grimes gives himself a pep talk in response.
Carmelo Hayes def. Duke Hudson {Semifinal Match}
So Odyssey Jones is winning this tournament. This tournament has been disappointing all around, filled with super short matches. Even this one, which ran through a commercial break, only had 5:43 of screen time. It was a solid match with a couple crazy bumps from Hayes, but is anyone invested in this tournament at all at this point? Hates hit the diving axe kick for the win. **½ .
Wes Lee & Nash Carter vs. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
I was really into the first half of this match, which was Barthel keep Carter from flying which totally disoriented the champion. The second half was more spotty, which was still fun, but then WALTER came down and you knew the finish was imminent. Dragunov attacked WALTER, which distracted Imperium from hitting the European Bomb. MSK immediately hit Aichner with the Hart Attack Blockbuster for the win at 8:31 (shown). Imperium beat up MSK and Dragunov after the match. Sigh. ***
The main event promo sees Samoa Joe come out to talk trash, then Karrion Kross come out to talk trash (behind a row of security), then Joe and Kross fight while that security tries to break them up. I guess this was supposed to be reminiscent of Joe’s NXT Championship feuds from his first run, but I mean who cares at this point? I’m sorry for my ho hum attitude, but this feud feels totally dragged out every since they officially announced the match.
