August 3, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
Ashante Adonis & Top Dolla def. Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza
Before I watched this, I saw someone on Twitter lament that it was a good match marred by a disqualification finish. I’d actually say that it wasn’t that good, that it felt directionless, and that that’s probably because after 7:27 (shown), Santos Escobar just arbitrarily hit Dolla with a chair. When you’re told to just do stuff to fill time until the guy on the outside hits a chair shot even though his crew isn’t in that much trouble, what’s the point of ‘ mapping out a match that matters? After the match, Escobar rips out Isaiah Scott’s grill, but Hit Row comes out on top anyway. So even the post-match stuff is 50/50. It’s time to start coming down really hard on this kind of crap. *½
Ridge Holland def. Ikemen Jiro
The power of a Dan Flash’s jacket couldn’t save Jiro from getting squashed. Holland hit a Michinoku Driver for the win at 3:13. Pete Dunne threatens Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher after the match. *
Frankie Monet is doing a hostile takeover of the Robert Stone Brand, and Robert Stone is happy to take it.
Roderick Strong def. Bobby Fish
This was more like it. Strong’s Diamond Mine cronies were on the floor but didn’t interfere because why ever would they? That’d make Strong look like he couldn’t get it done on his own. But their presence on the floor frazzled Fish enough for Strong to be able to stay in control for most of the match. The action was solid and this Undisputed Era B-Team blowout ends the way it should. Strong hit a modified End of Heartache for the win at 9:12 (shown). ***¼
Zack Gibson & James Drake def. LA Knight & Cameron Grimes
Knight forced Grimes to wear his butler outfit in the match. Knight leaves Grimes to the wolves and won’t tag in, so Grimes rips off the butler outfit and goes it alone. This is terrific. The numbers catch up to him quickly though, and the Grizzled Young Veterans hit the Ticket to Mayhem for the win at 4:47. I think they could have stretched this out and made Grimes look like a babyface dream, but I don’t want to argue with what’s happening too much because this is working more than anything else on this show. Ted DiBiase comes out after the match and tells Grimes that he has to figure out a way out of his butler situation. **½
Dakota Kai says that she’s responsible for Raquel Gonzalez’s career. She was happy to let Gonzalez get spotlight wins. That is, until Io Shirai handpicked Gonzalez to be her challenger at Takeover Stand & Deliver. But she let that go until Gonzalez didn’t put enough effort into being NXT Tag Team Champions, giving them what will surely be the shortest reign those titles see. Now, she wants Gonzalez’s title. Good promo.
Trey Baxter def. Joe Gacy {Quarterfinal Match}
This is sort of a big man vs. little man match, but much less so than the rest of the quarterfinal round and only because Baxter is very small. This was a hell of a showcase for him. Gacy got a couple of moments to shine, but Baxter’s escalating dives were the centerpiece of this match. He hit a 360 double stomp (not a 450, Wade Barrett, if he ends up in the same standing position he started in) for the win at 5:12. **¾
I have a lot of feelings about the Zoey Stark & Io Shirai restaurant segment. The idea is that Stark wants to bond with Shirai by eating at a Japanese restaurant with her, but Stark hates all the food and is jealous that the waitress and Shirai speak Japanese to each other. So Stark spits food out into napkins and dumps them on the floor and throws octopus behind her back against a wall so Shirai won’t know she didn’t eat. I also thought that she stiffed the waitress on the bill, but there might have been an out-of-frame hand off of cash at the end. Either way, am I supposed to like Stark because she has a childish palate, treats a restaurant like an actual baby would, and at the age of 27 doesn’t know what wasabi is? Because it makes me hate her.
Indi Hartwell can’t decide who she wants to win in tonight’s main event, but she’s leaning towards Dexter Lumis, Then, Karrion Kross calls out Samoa Joe. Joe runs out and beats up security guards (which I got tired of in his first NXT run and don’t need here) and Kross has seemingly disappeared. What the hell? Why did Kross disappear?! Then, WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov gets a Prime Target segment. Then, Kushida grants Strong a shot at his title, though they don’t say when. They also announce that Gonzalez and Dragunov will speak (in separate segments) next week and Ember Moon will fight Sarray.
Johnny Gargano def. Dexter Lumis
Depending on who wins, Hartwell either can or cannot date Lumis. The stipulation gets thrown in the garbage one minute after the match ends, so I wonder why they bothered promoting it that way. The match had some fun comedy spots, but I don’t care about the angle and they don’t care about the stips so it’s kind of a wash. Gargano hit Lumis with the Final Beat DDT for the win at 10:38 (shown), but then Hartwell ran into the ring to make out with Lumis as the show came to an end. **½
I really hope the show going back to being live next week puts a little oomph back into the main events. The rest of the show (save for the opener) flowed rather easily, but the main event this week and last didn’t feel important at all.
