July 13, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
The Breakout Tournament starts tonight, and they did a couple qualifying matches on 205 Live recently .
Dakota Kai def. Ember Moon
The women’s division got gutted on Friday when Shotzi Blackheart, Toni Storm, and Tegan Nox all got called up to refresh Smackdown after layoffs depleted their roster. Kind of makes me feel like a doofus for watching that battery charge for a month. This didn’t work for me. When Moon wasn’t in a groove, Kai would have to wait around for Moon to get into position for their next spot. Because of that, the crowd kept losing interest. I did like Raquel Gonzalez on the floor telling Moon that she’s nothing without Blackheart. Kai hit the Go2Kick for the win at 9:25 (shown of 13:02). Xia Li comes out after the match to challenge Gonzalez for the title. Gonzalez is game. **
Earlier today, Malcolm Bivens put out a Diamond Mine open challenge and Bobby Fish answered. Fish also said that all of Diamond Mine could get it. I had delightful flashbacks to this encounter. Then, we get a look at Ikemen Jiro. He’s handsome, but don’t let that fool you! Then, LA Knight grooms Cameron Grimes and dresses him for his butler job. Grimes is actually into it, which pisses off Knight.
Tyler Rust def. Bobby Fish
Fish is still over with this crowd despite spending countless weeks off TV. I suppose one could count them, but I won’t. I’m fairly sure Fish is the oldest member of the roster and it shows. On the bright side, he’s good enough that his slower pace isn’t egregiously noticeable. He’s in control for two minutes before Roderick Strong gets on the apron to distract him. Then, Rust hits a buzzsaw kick for the win at 2:38. Kushida backs Fish before Diamond Mine can attack. If you’re going to do a terrible finish, keep the match short. *
Things get heated between Samoa Joe and Karrion Kross in the back. They’re either building to a match between these two or a Joe heel turn and I really hope it’s the former. Then, Beth Phoenix pulls Indi Hartwell away from the Way to ask about Dexter Lumis. Apparently, the timing is just off for InDex. Phoenix thinks Hartweel should take a chance. The part of me that doesn’t care about Lumis disagrees with Phoenix, but the truth that’s genuinely good dating advice.
Sarray def. Gigi Dolin
I expect a few other noobs will get TV time now that Smackdown has a chunk of the NXT women’s roster. This match goes only a minute before Mandy Rose appears on the ramp. The crowd gives her a “you don’t go here,” chant. Sarray and Dolin moved on as if she wasn’t there and then had a rough match. Dolin landed awkwardly on her head a couple of times. Sarray hit her gnarly dropkick and a suplex that was probably supposed to be a uranage for the win at 3:33. ¾*
Santos Escobar def. Dexter Lumis
Before the match, Escobar made it clear he still wants the North American Championship. This was fine, just fine, and then the finish was the usual TV finish crap they overuse on this show lately. I remember a time when it was surprising when there was a garbage finish on NXT TV, but now it’s at least one a week outside of their marquee shows. Legado del Fantasma distracted and attacked Lumis, leading to the Phantom Driver getting the win for Escobar at 5:58 (shown of 9:19). Hartwell tries to carry Lumis to the back and then tries to kiss him when that fails, but Candice LeRae stops her. **¼
Wade Barrett sat down with Kyle O’Reilly to break down last week’s main event. O’Reilly is at peace with his loss, but he’s not happy with her performance. He’s wondering if he needs to be dirtbag O’Reilly to beat Cole. There’s definitely a rubber match coming. Then, Grimes has fun mowing Knight’s lawn. I’m so glad they have a different take on this tired bit than the usual.
Duke Hudson def. Ikemen Jiro {Quarterfinal Match}
Jiro’s music rules. That’s exceedingly rare these days. Hudson is super lean and moving a lot faster than he did in his EVOLVE appearances. He hit an uppercut in this match that absolutely jarred Jiro and I think legit pissed him off. Jiro got in a few shots, but Hudson hits a Sidewalk Slam for the win at 4:51. Fun little match, that was. **¾
Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa brawl with Pete Dunne & Oney Lorcan backstage. Joe must be too busy prepping for the main event to do anything about that. In fact, later Joe visits the Way to tell them the rules. Then, he has another staredown with Dunne. If Joe doesn’t end up wrestling this whole thing is gonna be a lame tease. Meanwhile, Grimes has hired a kid to do some of his chores while he sits by Knight’s pool. The kid kicks Knight in the shins and Grimes shoves him into the pool. Finally, Gonzalez vs. Li for the title and Kushida & Fish vs. Rust & Strong are confirmed for next week.
Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro def. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea
The KCs wrapped this one up quickly with the neckbreaker/450 splash at 3:28. I’d be down with them getting a bit more shine. After the match, Aliyah attacks Robert Stone. The crowd is pretty into it. Kamea stands by and lets it happen. Aliyah blows her a kiss on her way out. Frankie Monet comes out and takes Kamea to the back with her. Later, it becomes clear that the new alignment is Monet in charge of Kamea and Stone and Aliyah on her own. Not what I expected. Mandy Rose congratulates Monet on her accusation. *½
Adam Cole comes out for a chat. He runs down O’Reilly and tells him to reconsider asking for a rematch. He calls Joe an overpaid security guard. That brings out Bronson Reed, who wants a match. Cole tries to attack, but that goes poorly. Joe comes out for the main event, but doesn’t really interact with Cole or Reed.
Karrion Kross def. Johnny Gargano {NXT Championship Match}
The crowd is very pro-Gargano. Barrett starts things off by saying that Kross has zero physical weaknesses. Remember when he was champion for just a couple of days because Keith Lee separated his shoulder? That’s a physical weakness. Kross tried and Gargano is always game, but the champion’s limitations were really on display here. He just can’t move in the way you’re supposed to and often looks like he’s an inch away from breaking his own legs on bumps. He put Gargano away with three powerbombs, the side suplex, and the elbow to the back at 10:16 (shown of 12:47). After the match, Kross attacks Joe and chokes him out. If this isn’t building to Joe winning the title in August then they’ve miscalculated. ***¼
