July 1, 2021 – Newham, London
Emilia McKenzie def. Isla Dawn
This was a perfectly fine but just fine match until Dawn put her hands on McKenzie’s face and… had a seizure? Got trapped in a trance? Full blown orgasmed? I’ll give them tons of credit if that goes anywhere interesting, but I have zero faith in that. McKenzie caught Dawn with a running knee at 6:07. **¼
We look back at WALTER’s attack on Ilja Dragunov last week. Then, Mark Coffey is getting competitive with Wolfgang. They both have a recent singles win, but Coffey has an idea for how he can get a leg up. Later, Sid Scala wants Subculture to get a tag title shot, but Pretty Deadly insists they earn it. So it will be Mark Andrews vs. Lewis Howley next week and if Andrews wins the title match is on.
Tyler Bate def. Jack Starz {NXT UK Heritage Cup Match}
The first round had a fun energy, but ended without a fall. Bate gets a pinfall in the second round thanks to an unconvincing roll up 39 seconds in. I guess I’m convinced given the context that Starz is basically a jobber. But it didn’t look like there was any leverage there. At 2:08 of the third round, Starz blocked la majistral cradle and pinned Bate. That came after a very spirited couple of minutes. At 1:21 of the third round, Bate hit the Tyler Driver for the win. Starz had him in a Boston crab that looked a little dangerous, but Bate powered out and battered Starz to win the match. This felt appropriate. It gave Starz a little bit of shine but mostly kept Bate very strong. After the match, the junior Coffey came out to congratulate Bate and give him a little slap. So that’ll set up Gallus vs. Mustache Mountain and a Cup match for Coffey. I’m just happy this wasn’t born out of Coffey interrupting one of Bate’s backstage promos. ***
Meiko Satomura comes to the ring for a chat. Nina Samuels interrupts, but before she can challenge Satomura, Amale attacks her. Amale says that she’s tired of the same girls getting recycled on this show. Me too, Amale. Satomura levels her and says she can have a match.
After last week’s main event, Coffey light-heartedly challenges Brown to a proper rubber match so they can actually settle their issue. That makes sense and was kinda funny. This episode is firing on all cylinders, storyline wise. Then, we get a better look at Blair Davenport, who indeed is Bea Priestley.
Aiofe Valkyrie def. Mila Smidt
Jinny watched as Valkyrie made quick work of Smidt. She hit the Peripeteia for the win at 3:44. I like that we have a wrestler who is all about the suplexes on the roster, and hopefully they’ll soon let Smidt wrestle in matches where she isn’t getting rolled. *½
Kenny Williams calls Nathan Frazer a cockroach. Then, Eddie Dennis interrupts a Trent Seven interview (of course), so Seven intimidates him by reminding him how badly he injured Dennis at Takeover what feels like a million years ago. They’ll fight next week.
Jordan Devlin def. A-Kid
This match had next to no hype going into it and then they go out there and put on the most fun bop this show has had in forever. There wasn’t a single moment wasted here. Every single movement led directly to the next, but not in a way that felt planned out or over-choreographed. I could have watched this go on for another ten minutes at least. Devlin slammed A-Kid’s knee on the steps and then later contorted his leg in a brutally unnatural way to get the submission victory at 15:21. What a pleasant surprise! ****
