Toni Storm def. Zoey Stark
This didn’t capture the attention in the first few minutes, but when they came back from a commercial break they started throwing bombs at each other. Speaking of bombs, Storm picked up the win with a hiptoss driver (I have no idea what else to call it) at 7:44 (shown of 11:21). Frankie Monet pops up after the match to steal Storm’s spotlight in anticipation of her premier next week. **¾
Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher don’t like hearing Legado del Fantasma complain about not getting a tag title match. Thatcher speaks some random spanish and challenges them to a match. Then, Cameron Grimes arrives and gets teased by Jake Atlas over his issues with Ted DiBiase. Then, Indi Hartwell & Candice LeRae get a spa treatment. Unbeknownst to them, Dexter Lumis hears them talking trash about him before sulking off. Beth Phoenix’s reaction face sums up how I feel about this angle. Then, we get a Prime Target Special for next week’s NXT Championship Match. Having Paul Heyman pop in on this was a good move.
Jake Atlas def. Cameron Grimes
Grimes plays VIrgil’s victory and other embarrassing DiBiase moments on the big screen before the match. The crowd chants for DiBiase anyway. The match is joined in progress after a commercial break. It’s fine, but who cares because it’s just filler until DiBiase shows up on the ramp and distracts Grimes. Altas gets a sunset flip for the win at 4:51. Just tell me where this is going because I’m not interested in cheap distraction finishes. *½
Pete Dunne does a sit-down interview. He has reasons to go after every title in NXT and NXT UK. He correctly says that he’s never had a bad match (in WWE at least). He makes it clear that the NXT Championship is his next target.
Killian Dain def. Alexander Wolfe
Drake Maverick is in Dain’s corner and he’s still paranoid that Dain will betray him. Wolfe doesn’t seem thrilled about being in this match. It’s a match in name only, as very quickly Wolfe is distracted by Marcel Barthel’s insistence that he use a chair and gets hit with Dain’s Divide at 1:51. Barthel and Fabian Aichner attack Wolfe after the match. They’re calling their finisher the Imperium Bomb now. European Bomb is way better. ½*
Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai have no beef, even if they have a different philosophy about showing respect to your opponents after title matches. They want a tag title shot. Ever-Rise show up to say that Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon are next in line while plugging Ever-Rise Live. Gonzalez knocks out Matt Martel. Chase Parker’s response is pretty funny, “You got sucker punched a little bit, pal.”
Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza def. Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa
Mendoza got a bloody nose during the match, but they fixed him up during the commercial. The finishes just suck a big ol’ pipe tonight. Here we saw the Grizzled Young Veterans attack Ciampa and feed him to Legado, who got the win at 12:07 (shown of 15:39). The match was unsurprisingly bonkers before that point. ***¼
Bobby Fish says he really only came back last week to attack Dunne & Oney Lorcan, who put him out of action at WarJames. He wants to fight Dunne next week. Back at the spa, LeRae’s credit card is declined. It comes out that LeRae staged the Lumis-sends-Blackheart-and-Moon-flowers bit. Hartwell isn’t mad at LeRae, but she’s super jazzed that Lumis is still into her. Later, Blackheart & Moon tell the Gonzalez, Kai, and the Way they’re not to be overlooked. This promo is what the kids call cringe. Later still, Diamond Mine is still coming, apparently. But hey, when? I believe this is three times they’ve shown the same video with no updates. Wade Barrett actually makes a comment about that.
Sarray def. Aliyah
Sarray screamed her way through this little match, destroying Aliyah with dropkicks and an exploder at 2:25. *¾
Ashante Adonis & Top Dolla def. Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese
Hit Rowwwwwww. That’ll stick in your head. This was super squishy. Dolla hit Daivari with a fireman’s carry neckbreaker for the win at 2:16. Remember when Nese won a title at WrestleMania? Isaiah Scott puts the winner of tonight’s main event on notice. *½
NXT GM William Regal announces Legado del Fantasma vs. MSK for the tag titles in two weeks. He books a rematch of the Women’s Dusty Classic finals for next week. He also says he’s bringing in a lot of new cruiserweights to find competition for Kushida. Grimes and DiBiase will have a Million-Dollar Face Off next week. Will they switch faces?!
Bronson Reed def. Johnny Gargano {NXT North American Championship Steel Cage Match}
I probably liked the first match between these two more than most, and I’m at peace with that. I’m also at peace with how much more I liked this match the more it went on. A lot of that was coming to terms with Austin Theory’s interference and internalizing it as Reed fighting a two-on-one battle. Of course, that only worked if he won, which he thankfully did. I also wondered the whole match if we’d see a Megatsunami, which we sadly did not. We did get a pair of standard Tsunamis and a clean pinfall at 11:58 (shown of 15:29). Anyway, this rocked my socks. ****
