NXT 617

April 20, 2021 – Orlando, Florida

You know it’s 420 because Kyle O’Reilly starts the show wearing a terrible hat and quotes Dumb and Dumber. This has gotta be a stoned goof. He’s put Adam Cole behind him and it feels good. He teases challenging for the North American Championship, then starts challenging for the NXT Championship, but he’s interrupted by Cameron Grimes. Grimes made money betting on O’Reilly at Takeover. He wants to team up and merchandize. The whole thing gets very internet. O’Reilly then knocks out Grimes and says they’re fighting tonight. This didn’t make any sense. Grimes eliminated O’Reilly and he just happened to already have been booked against him tonight? Or was O’Reilly just being a jerk and decking a guy who helped him make money on dogecoin? Whatever, the match will probably be good but I didn’t care for how we got there.

Earlier today, Zoey Stark asked if she could be Sarray’s first opponent. Sarray’s handler is Simon Inoki, and it’s super weird that nobody addresses that. Then, LA Knight says some stuff about Dexter Lumis. Then, Leon Ruff says some stuff about Isaiah Scott.

LA Knight def. Dexter Lumis
For reasons I don’t understand, Lumis seems to be really popular with NXT fans online. Given that and the fact that they’re insistent on pushing him, I wish they’d let him just wrestle a normal style and let the weirdo gimmick come out in mannerisms rather than rest holds. They go all punchy kicky for a while until Indi Hartwell shows up at ringside. Both guys get distracted and Lumis east the Snapmare Driver giving Knight the win at 6:24 (shown of 9:50). After the match, the Way stops Hartwell and Lumis from kissing. Wouldn’t Lumis be upset with her? This hasn’t grabbed me. *¾

Beth Phoenix interviews Io Shirai. Shirai goes over video footage of her loss and then says she’ll come back for the title after some rest. Frankie Monet and the pomeranian interrupt. Monet says she’s been watching Phoenix since she was a kid, which is weird because they’re basically the same age. She offers to take Shirai’s spot during her sabbatical but Shirai is a cat person. Why is today’s episode so goofy?

Zack Gibson & James Drake def. Tyler Breeze & Fandango
Breezango dress as Queen’s Guards, which the Grizzled Young Veterans don’t like. Breezango is so dead in the water that I wish they’d get a breather or change things up. I feel nothing when I watch their matches now. This match was no different. The GYV did some nice heeling here, but it wasn’t enough to make me interested in the result of this match. They hit the Ticket to Mayhem on Breeze for the win at 5:29 (shown of 9:02). **

The Way doesn’t want Hartwell talking about Lumis in interviews. Bronson Reed interrupts to support Hartwell and threaten Johnny Gargano’s title. Austin Theory has apparently made an arrangement with NXT GM William Regal that Reed won’t get a title shot until he pins Theory. Johnny Gargano (Papa John) is upset that he wasn’t consulted. Then, we learn that Ted DiBiase has outbid Grimes for an NFT.

Sarray def. Zoey Stark
This was a perfect debut for Sarray. A quick squash wouldn’t have gotten across what makes Sarray cool, but going balls to the wall with Stark for a little bit did the job. They really beat the boogers out of each other. Sarray took a lot of punishment, but avoided Stark’s biggest moves and hit a T-bone suplex for the win at 7:14. Toni Storm attacks Stark after the match. I’m really glad they let the whole match play out before the storyline stuff. ***¼

Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai bask in being at the top of the division. Kai says Mercedes Martinez can’t get a shot just because she wants one. Gonzalez says that whoever wants to step up can get in line. Then, Candice LeRae confronts the Women’s Tag Champs but gets beaten up because Hartwell bailed on her on the way.

Kushida def. Oney Lorcan {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
They show a cute video of Kushida’s title win and celebration before the match, featuring a very bearded Steve Corino. This match is the result of an open challenge. I like that they’re keeping the contagious open challenge thing going. Kushida is barefoot now and he’s tweaked his style to emphasize strikes more than usual. I’m down with that. This was pretty fun, though short. As always with Lorcan singles matches, I wish they’d find a way to get him on a Takeover in a match like this and give him some real time. Kushida caught him with the Hoverboard Lock for the win at 6:06 (shown of 9:23). Legado del Fantasma attacks Kushida after the match but MSK makes the save. I would like this six-man tag and/or Legado tag title challenge ASAP. ***

Martinez reminds Gonzalez about her challenge and teases her for letting Kai talk for her. She’s going to take out Kai so there are no more buffers. Later, Hartwell lets the Way (including a battered LeRae) that they’re getting a tag title shot. On what grounds though? Having already lost to the champs three times on TV?

Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner def. Matt Martel & Chase Parker
This barely gets going before Killian Dain & Drake Maverick come out to scream at Imperium for being baddies. Imperium more or less ignores them and hits Parker with the European Bomb for the win at 1:55. Squish squish. N/A

Kyle O’Reilly def. Cameron Grimes
Karrion Kross stares down O’Reilly in the back before the match. I appreciate that they put on a good singles match with O’Reilly in the main event, but Grimes isn’t at his level right now so there wasn’t much drama about how it’d end. I don’t understand why NXT isn’t putting more into the main events since moving to Tuesdays. Just because there’s no competition from AEW doesn’t mean there’s no competition from every other TV show and cell phone app in the world. O’Reilly got the win with the diving kneedrop at 10:57 (shown of 13:27). ***¼
