March 31, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
Cameron Grimes def. Roderick Strong
Grimes tries to sell Strong on some hybrid Undisputed Era merch and music before the match. These guys had a solid match, but Strong kept getting distracted by Undisputed Era iconography. Grimes pulled a UE wristband from his trunks and that was enough to discombobulate Strong and hit the Cave In for the win at 8:14 (shown). **½
Santos Escobar def. Tyler Breeze
Looks like Breeze and Strong went cupping together. This was very one-sided in Escobar’s favor, which was kind of surprising given that Breeze got a bit of promo time before the match. Nothing to write home about, but certainly fine. Escobar hit the Phantom Driver for the win at 7:11. MSK saved Breeze from a Legado del Fantasma beating after the match. Then, the Grizzled Young Veterans popped up on the big screen to talk trash. **
Austin Theory tells Johnny Gargano that he’s in tonight’s battle royal so that he can get the North American Championship shot at Takeover and they can do the Fingerpoke of Doom. Gargano says that it killed the business, but Theory doesn’t understand how that’s possible since they’re still there. The idea that one storyline idea killed the wildly and broadly incompetent WCW is pretty damn stupid. Meanwhile, Taya Valkyrie’s pomeranian has arrived at the WWE Performance Center. Then, Io Shirai says she picked Raquel Gonzalez to challenge her because she’s a huge challenge.
Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell def. Gigi Dolin & Angela Arnold
Very squishy stuff here. I paused the match in the middle to take care of a couple things, and now that I’ve finished the match I actually can’t remember if Dolin ever tagged in. Hartwell hit Arnold with a diving elbowdrop for the win at 3:09. After the match, the Way challenges for the Women’s Tag Championships at Takeover. N/A
Gonzalez beats up Shirai on the way to the ring for her match and the pomeranian is still walking around the building. Also, Strong leaves the building, bailing on the main event.
Raquel Gonzalez def. Zoey Stark
Another good showing for Stark, albeit a very short one. She looked strong here, taking out Dakota Kai and holding her own. But twice she made herself vulnerable to the powerbomb, and Gonzalez connected with it the second time for the win at 4:54. Shirai tries to attack Gonzalez after the match and gets taken out again. **¾
The pomeranian is running wild! Pete Dunne and Kushida argue over who is the best technical wrestler in NXT. They’ll meet with others) in the main event tonight. Then, they show a Kyle O’Reilly vs. Adam Cole video package.
Xia Li & Mei Ying def. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter
Ying stays on the ramp as the match begins. Nobody on WWE’s social media knows that Ying is the boss’s name and that Tian Sha is the group. Carter goes after Ying and gets choked and doped. Li hits Catanzaro with a jumping kick for the win at 3:07. Time to get Ying in the ring. *
Tommaso Ciampa tells us that his wife and daughter gave him the necklace that WALTER stepped on. Duh. He also reflects on folks who have said he hasn’t been as good since neck surgery. Well that’s pretty much true. He’d rather fight for his daughter than be a guy with nothing to lose, and he’s gonna take WALTER’s title at Fakeover. At Takeover, Finn Balor plans on making the match go long so that Karrion Kross gets gassed. Earlier, Kross said he wouldn’t let the match go long. The pomeranian is named Frankie, and he’ll debut in two weeks.
LA Knight def. Dexter Lumis, Cameron Grimes, Bronson Reed, Isaiah Scott, Leon Ruff, Kushida, Pete Dunne, Tyler Rust, Jake Atlas, and Austin Theory {Battle Royal}
Lumis doesn’t do anything the entire match and it’s dumb as fuck. From the floor, Malcolm Bivens grabbed Atlas, leading to his elimination. But then Rust was eliminated next. Theory got dumped to the floor and then nipped up to more or less eliminate himself. Dunne & Kushida eliminate each other, which is totally fine because this is the match I’ve wanted to see for weeks. Moments later they announce that it’s happening at Fakeover. Since Strong didn’t show up for this match, everyone else has secured a spot in the Gauntlet Eliminator next week and are now fighting to determine the entrance order. Reed eliminated Ruff and Scott, who’d been fighting each other the whole match. Lumis finally moves to help Grimes and Knight eliminate Reed. Lumis and Knight toss Grimes. After a short scrap, Knight eliminates Lumis for the win. Whatever, Lumis is winning the eliminator for reasons I don’t understand. This battle royal was pretty weak save for the very brief Dunne vs. Kushida bit. *3/4
Gonzalez and Shirai brawl as the show comes to an end, and Shirai finally gets the better of her upcoming challenger.
