March 10, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
There’s no fancy name for tonight’s episode, but it’s a stacked card a la New Year’s Evil or Halloween Havoc. NXTGM William Regal starts the show by announcing that Takeover: Stand & Deliver will be a two-night event, first in the usual NXT timeslot on USA and the following night on Peacock. Takeover Stand and then Takeover Deliver. Not really but that’s what I’m going with. The women’s division is out on the ramp, and Regal also announces that now there will be NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships. Duh. Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai are named the first champions on the back of their Dusty Classic tournament win. I like that. The title belts look like the men’s titles with a white strap instead of black. Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon want a title shot. Regal grants it.
Io Shirai def. Toni Storm {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
I’m not mad this is happening, but it makes Mercedes Martinez’s presence in the story rather baffling. They came back from a commercial, ran three and a half minutes of the match, then went back to a commercial. That’s so odd. Aside from that though this was fun. It felt like they went from zero to sixty very quickly and then stayed at sixty for most of the match. I especially liked the finish, as the Storm Zero couldn’t end Shirai, so Storm went out of her comfort zone and tried to hit a diving headbutt. Shirai countered that to a crossface for the win at 9:28 (shown of 11:59). ***½
Bronson Reed attacks LA Knight, setting up a match for next week. Later, Imperium tells Timothy Thatcher to rejoin them. They’re even willing to take on Tommaso Ciampa out of respect to Thatcher. Later still, Leon Ruff is mad about Isaiah Scott’s comments last week, so he’s going to beat him next week. Even later, Adam Cole says that he’s gotten the dead weight out of the Undisputed Era, sort of suggesting he may have new allies.
Pete Dunne def. Jake Atlas
This was pretty squishy, though Atlas got a few of his flips in. Dunne got the win with an armbar at 4:24. After the match, Dunne calls himself the best technical wrestler in the entire world and dares someone to prove him wrong. With Thatcher in an angle with Imperium, I wonder who they’re thinking about pairing with Dunne here. Maybe Kushida?! **
Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart def. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez {NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Match}
If Gonzalez doesn’t turn on Kai tonight I’ll be surprised. Here’s another match where the commercial comes two minutes into the match. A lot of people loved the match between these teams at Takeover, but I was very medium on it. I liked this one a little more. It was shorter and thus structured more tightly. There were also far fewer moments where they looked lost in the ring. Gonzalez got to look like a beast, and I love when Gonzalez gets to look like a beast. Kai accidentally sends her partner to the floor and then Blackheart rolls her up for the win and the titles at 8:42 (shown of 12:17). Gonzalez doesn’t turn on Kai here, but it has to be imminent. This was really the only way to go because there are no other challengers for Shirai at the moment aside from Gonzalez. ***½
Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell don’t join in the big celebration for the new tag champs. Austin Theory walks up upset about his revelation about Dexter Lumis last week. Lumis vs. Theory next week. Later, Jordan Devlin says that he’s coming to the United States to fight Santos Escobar. Even later, Zoey Stark tells us a bit about her background. And before the main event, we see that Gonzalez & Kai are pissed, but before anything can happen Shirai shows up and offers Gonzalez a title shot. Also, Ciampa wants to fight WALTER (presumably for his title) and tells Thatcher that he’s booked them in a match next week against Imperium. He didn’t stop to ask Thatcher if that’s what he wanted.
Xia Li def. Kayden Carter
Carter actually gets a leg up on Li to start, but that doesn’t last long. Hobbled Kacy Catanzaro comes to ringside and hits Li with a crutch, drawing a disqualification at 2:10. Boa gets in the ring to snatch the crutch. Carter hits Boa to save Catanzaro from an attack. N/A
Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza def. Zack Gibson & James Drake
Almost immediately, MSK comes out dressed as Breezango, distracting Drake and allowing Mendoza to roll him up for the win at 1:42. Wes Lee hits Gibson’s hand with the astronaut helmet he was wearing, and then Breezango attacks Legado del Fantasma. I’d watch this eight-man tag. ¾*
Finn Balor def. Adam Cole {NXT Championship Match}
Cole is still using the Undisputed Era music. The commentators say that Balor gave Cole this title shot because he knew it was the only way he’d be able to get his hands on Cole. Why not have Balor say that ever? Anyway, this is a threematch and I love a threematch. I especially love them when the first two matches in the series were both great. This is only Cole’s third match in 2021. It is Balor’s sixth (only counting NXT). This tilted a little less stellar than their previous two matches, but only a little. I did love that after Balor survived the Last Shot and the Panama Sunrise, he shot Cole to the floor so he could take a quick nap in the ring. On the floor, Cole was stalked by a returning, Canadian tuxedo wearing Kyle O’Reilly. Balor used the distraction to hit Cole with the 1916 on the floor and the Coup de Gras in the ring for the win at 15:00 (shown of 20:06). O’Reilly attacked Cole after the match and chased him to the back. Balor stood in the ring until Karrion Kross appeared to bum me out about the Takeover main event. Balor asked him what took him so long, so at least the champion still looks cool. ***¾
My best guess at Takeover based on where we are now, a mix of where they seem to be going and where I hope they go:
Balor vs. Kross
Shirai vs. Gonzalez
O’Reilly vs. Cole
MSK vs. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch
Blackheart & Moon vs. LeRae & Hartwell
Devlin vs. Escobar
Gargano vs. Lumis
Kushida vs. Dunne
Catanzaro & Carter vs. Li & Mei Ying
There are also a lot of midcard feuds that will move forward next week (featuring Ciampa, Thatcher, Imperium, Scott, Ruff, Reed, and Knight), and there’s always Cameron Grimes to think about.
