March 3, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa
For all the complaining I did about the tag titles being relegated to the bottom of the card in the second half of 2020, at least they were being defended monthly. January and February had zero defenses. This was a fun smash-em-up between two teams of thin-haired whities, but the finish was garbage on an unseasonably warm day in March. After nine (aired) minutes of stiff slugs, Imperium came out and stood on the ramp, distracted Thatcher and Ciampa, leading (too) directly to the champs hitting their DDT finisher (Name it! And name the team! And it’s also too similar to Ticket to Mayhem!) for the win at 9:48 (shown). **¾
Roderick Strong is in the ring to call out Adam Cole. Finn Balor answers instead. Strong blames Balor for the end of the Undisputed Era. Everything was fine before Balor came into their lives. Balor announces that Cole will get a title shot next week. Why though? He rips Strong, so Strong attacks him. They’ll fight in the main event.
Ember Moon def. Aliyah
The commentators actually bring up the fact that these two had a match against each other on NXT TV four years ago! That’s a seriously sad indictment of Aliyah. They also had a match on TV three years ago, so Aliyah is officially a long-term designated jobber for Moon. This went mostly the same as their matches from the past; Moon dominated almost completely. Shotzi Blackheart got into it a bit at ringside with Robert Stone & Jessi Kamea. That’s four years of progress for you. Moon hit the Eclipse for the win at 4:55. *½
In the back, Thatcher reveals that he has a past with Imperium that they want to throw in his face. Ciampa won’t let them. Given the amount of wXw content on the WWE Network, I’m less surprised that I thought I’d be to see them reference Ringkampf like this.
Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler def. Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai {WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match}
They accomplished quite a bit here. They showed that Kai was willing to stand her ground against Baszler in spits of the bullying from years past. They teased Jax vs. Gonzalez while leaving the door open for more. And they had Baszler go over on Kai, which also leaves room for Kai to get her revenge on Baszler on a bigger stage. The funky finish was weird but not absurdly distracting. Adam Pearce ran out and forced a referee to give the match to the champs by submission when Baszler put the Kirifuda Clutch on Kai at 9:44 (shown), despite Kay not being legal. Lame but not the worst. What was the worst was how limited Jax clearly is in the ring. True, she shouldn’t be bumping a ton, but she seems unable to quickly get to the mat and back up. That ain’t good. ***
Isaiah Scott is in the studio wondering how Leon Ruff got a title shot while Scott hasn’t gotten any opportunities. I dunno, I sat through his lame feud for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. Don’t gaslight me, Swerve! Later, Regal rips Page for his actions. Even later, Regal says he’ll have an announcement about their conversation that will change the landscape of NXT. Guessing a new women’s tag championship is in the works. Later still, we learn that Xia Li has injured Kacy Catanzaro and put her on the shelf. Kayden Carter wants to fight Li next week.
Bronson Reed def. Cameron Grimes
LA Knight had some things to say in the ring before the match. He made a bunch of sports references and admitted that he’s not very exciting in the ring. Grimes’ entrance music is his new Money to the Moon song. The match is a punishment to Grimes for attacking that guy in the parking lot last week. This was pretty whatever. Reed hit a super jump, which I suppose is notable, but the match was short and ended when Knight distracted Reed and Grimes hit the Cave In for the win at 5:01 (shown of 8:28). *¾
Throughout the show, the Way has been in therapy over Austin Theory’s kidnapping by Dexter Lumis. Theory and Indi Hartwell, at therapy, are still very pro Dexter Lumis. The Garganos don’t understand it. The therapist reveals that she spoke to Lumis earlier and it turns out he can’t stand Theory and was excited to return him to the Way. Theory takes it badly. It was all pretty dumb, except for Johnny Gargano wondering out loud why Lumis never gets arrested.
Chase Parker & Matt Martel were set to fight Tyler Breeze & Fandango, but Legado del Fantasma attack Breezango and Ever-Rise. Whatever.
Finn Balor def. Roderick Strong
Strong has a non-Undisputed Era thing going now, but sadly he’s not back to his pre-UE music. So yeah, this was great. Strong put in his best singles performance since his Takeover match against Matt Riddle, and Balor’s incredible run on top continues. That End of Heartache countered to a double stomp was breathtaking. Balor used that shift in momentum to run Strong down with the Coup de Gras and the 1916 for the win at 11:17 (shown of 13:47). Cole comes out and stares Balor down to close the show. ***¾
