Wes Lee & Nash Carter def. Killian Dain & Drake Maverick {Quarterfinal Match}
This may have been Dain & Maverick’s swan song in the tournament, but they worked very well as a team regardless. Hopefully this speaks to a resurgent division that won’t just fade away after the tournament ends like it did last year. MSK is already over and did more of the same this week that they did in their first appearance. Nothing wrong with that. They got the win at 7:33 with the Hart Attack Blockbuster deal. ***
We get a bit of character work from Curt Stallion, who is a starry-eyed, well-dressed Texan. I can dig it. More of this soft-spoken but determined biz from him please. Later, the women of the Way are stoked to win the Dusty Classic, and Johnny Gargano now thinks that Kushida’s name is bad luck. Dexter Lumis stalks in the background. Then, Scarlett plays with tarot cards.
Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea {Quarterfinal Match}
This wasn’t quite a squash because Aliyah got more than a brief moment to shine. I’m always impressed when she doesn’t do anything embarrassing. Low bar, but a bar jumped over nonetheless. Kamea didn’t get to do anything but get destroyed by Gonzalez’s powerbomb at 5:58. Gonzalez was barely in the match too, but the moment she got going the match was over. She’s been booked beautifully. **¼
Tyler Rust def. Dante Rios
So the gimmick is that Rust is ambitious but Malcolm Bivens wants him to get easy wins for a while. I wonder where that could go. This was as squishy as you expect, and Rust won with the Rings of Saturn at 4:00. N/A
Zack Gibson & James Drake def. Kushida & Leon Ruff {Quarterfinal Match}
I’m surprised this match went off without the Way interfering against Kushida. That said, this match was dope as hell. Kushida does so many small things well. The GYV were as sneaky and smarmy as ever and Ruff got to fly around the ring well enough. The GYV hit the Ticket to Mayhem on Rush for the win at 9:55 (shown).. After the match, the Way attack Kushida and Ruff, but mostly Kushida. Dexter Lumis sneaks up behind Theory, which I guess is how he makes the save. Please just give Kushida a singles match against Gargano and leave Lumis out of it. ***¼
Stallion has been attacked backstage. He’s well enough to say that Legado del Fantasma attacked him. Pretty lame if that’s their way of postponing the match. Then, they show an ad for NXT UK, so I guess the British lockdown hasn’t caused problems for production of that show. Then, NXT GM William Regal screams at Legado del Fantasma and says the match will happen no matter what next week. Santos Escobar finds a tarot card in his things. I guess that’s a nod to Karrion Kross; I wish it had been an Ace. Later, Imperium says that now that their unity is being restored, so too will be their dominance. They hint that WALTER is coming. I won’t hold my breath.
Toni Storm comes to the ring to demand that Io Shirai give her a title shot. Shirai comes out and snatches the microphone. She’ll fight Storm anywhere. Storm attacks and they scrap. Shirai comes out on top but Mercedes Martinez attacks her from behind. In the end, it’s Storm who comes out on top, destroying the champ with her titanic tush.
Bronson Reed def. Isaiah Scott
It’s been almost thirty minutes since the last match. Reed no longer has the lizard on his jacket, so I guess he decided that was better than naming it. Scott was more competitive here than he was the last time these two met in the ring. Reed’s suplex into the Death Valley Driver is sick. Let’s call it the Kaiju Driver. Reed gutted it out through Scott’s strikes and dives and picked up the win with the Tsunami at 5:51 (shown of 9:22). It’s a shame so much of the match got gobbled up by a commercial break. ***
Kyle O’Reilly & Finn Balor def. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch
The bell rings while all four guys are in the ring. Pet peeve activated, though I think it’s a TV time thing. A few things happened here that I think are important to mention. The first is that the tag team champions seemed like a big deal for the first time in their reign. This is because they were treated like a threat, seeing Balor need to recruit his arch rival to fight them. They also dominated this match. I think it was a mistake for O’Reilly and Balor to win here. I’d prefer, if they’re not going to use this to give that team a tag title shot, that the champs remain strong. That said, if this ends with the Undisputed Era winning the tournament, then the tag titles, then defending against Balor and O’Reilly I’ll happily eat my words. O’Reilly caught Burch in a heel hook for the win at 9:28 (shown of 11:58). ***½
After the match, Dunne comes in to help the tag champs beat up Balor and O’Reilly. Dunne snaps Balor’s fingers before the Undisputed Era runs in for the save. Balor symbolically stands between O’Reilly and his UE brothers. He backs away, but the gap between O’Reilly and his friends remain. If that was deliberate, it was beautiful. If it wasn’t and they don’t do anything with it, they’re idiots.
The women’s quarterfinals wrapped up two nights later on 205 Live.

Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon def. Marina Shafir & Zoey Stark {Quarterfinal Match}
In her time away from TV, Shafir has undoubtedly improved. She’s incorporated grappling into her moveset, which makes sense given her background and sets her apart from other women on the roster. I’d be cool with her getting more TV time after watching this. Stark didn’t have much of a chance to show off but looked fine when she was in the ring. I like that Moon & Blackheart have a few tandem moves now too. This was a pleasant surprise, if quite short and squishy. Moon made Stark tap to an STF at 7:43. **¾
