Kushida & Leon Ruff def. Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory {Opening Round Match}
The bad guys did bad guy things and the good guys did high-flying good guy things. This had a great pace and was the right choice for the opener. Kushida pinned Gargano with a hammerlock suplex at 11:14 (shown). I don’t understand how anyone can crap on Gargano. The guy’s gimmick is job-proof, so he can put people over all the time, get wins sparingly where he needs them, and always remain relevant. Plus his matches are always good. What’s not to like here? ***
Pete Dunne lambasts Finn Balor for leaving the UK, while he stayed and built the British wrestling scene. And now he gets compared to Balor at every turn. He wants Balor’s title. Then, Malcolm Bivens is surprised to find that Tyler Rust requested to face Bronson Reed. Bivens would have liked an easier opponent for Rust.
Karrion Kross def. Ashante Adonis
Desmond Troy is in Adonis’s corner because they’re set to be partners in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic this weekend. Kross wins in 1:17 with the elbow to the back of the head. He puts Troy in the Kross Jacket after the match. Kross is now 10-0 since arriving in NXT. N/A
MSK tests my patience with a bad Borat impression. The one saving grace about the Borat sequel seemed to be that not so many people saw it so their terrible impressions didn’t sweep the world. Let’s keep it that way, fellas. Then, Toni Storm & Mercedes Martinez say they aren’t friends and they don’t need to be to win the Dusty Classic.
Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado def. Marcel Bartel & Adrian Barthel {Opening Round Match}
This was a little spotty and a little sloppy, but it was mostly fun and games and that’s more than we usually get from Imperium these days. It’s time to find something for them to do because yikes, they’ve become vanilla. Dorado hits a Shooting Star Press on Barthel for the win at 10:11 (shown). After the match, Alexander Wolfe shows up on the ramp and shares a salute with his Imperium buddies. Wolfe is great and this is at least something, I hope. **¾
Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter def. Toni Storm & Mercedes Martinez {Quarterfinal Match}
Before the match, the entire field for the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic came out on the stage and was introduced by Beth Phoenix. Actual Beth Phoenix, not just her disembodied voice like on commentary. Catanzaro and Carter now have matching gear and tandem moves, so that’s nice. They controlled a lot of this match, way more than I was expecting. And they looked good doing it. Io Shirai popped up and got some revenge on Martinez by throwing her onto the announce table, leaving Storm open to fall victim to Catanzaro hitting an insane twisting senton at 9:18 (shown of 12:50). That move is reckless as hell, so I guess it’s good that Catanzaro is small. ***
Finn Balor wants a match with Pete Dunne, but first he wants to cut off his support system. NXT GM William Regal gives him some advice about being a good manipulator. Then, Bronson Reed bumps into Isaiah Scott on his way to the ring. Then, Adonis is pulled from his 205 Live Dusty Classic match this Friday because of injury. Before more can be said about it, KC&KC run in to celebrate.
Bronson Reed def. Tyler Rust
Reed hits power moves so Rust cheats a bit and goes for strikes. Meanwhile, Storm and Shirai fight backstage. Looks like a triple threat match for the Women’s Championship is coming up on Valentine’s Day. Good way to stall until Gonzalez is ready to take the title. Anyway, Reed puts Rust away without too much trouble with the Tsunami at 4:53. **
Balor visits the Undisputed Era locker room. He wants Kyle O’Reilly to be his partner against the tag champs. The tension is thick but O’Reilly is game. The match is next week. It’s too bad Kross is hanging over the title picture because they could mine way more out of the O’Reilly/Balor rivalry.
Santos Escobar comes out and rips on all the other champs in NXT. Gargano is lame because he deals with curses, Balor is lame because he got his jaw broken, and Kross is lame because he has an elaborate entrance and couldn’t hold onto the NXT title to make a title defense. The Lucha House Party breaks up the speech to fight with their quarterfinal round opponents. Curt Stallion runs out to get their backs as it seems like they’re finally going to pay off Stallion’s contendership. Someone should tell Wade Barrett, who doesn’t know he has a title shot due. The match finally happens next week.
Timothy Thatcher def. Tommaso Ciampa {Fight Pit}
The pit is set up separate from the ring this time, making for an interesting visual. Did they start on the scaffolding in the Thatcher vs. Matt Riddle Fight Pit? Because they do here. This was about as stiff and gritty as the first Fight Pit, though Thatcher didn’t lose any teeth this time around. It lacked a bit of the dynamism of the Riddle fight, but I was entertained all the way through. They used the cage in interesting ways, culminating in Thatcher wrapping Ciampa’s leg around a post and putting on a Stretch Muffler for the win at 11:31 (shown of 14:00). Thatcher shows Ciampa respect after the match. ***½
After the show went off the air, Thatcher told Ciampa that he respected him, so Ciampa suggested they take the open spot in the Dusty Classic. Two days later, they did just that on 205 Live. I’m not mad about 205 Live’s stint as NXT Heat.
January 22, 2021 – Orlando, Florida
Candice LeRae & Indie Hartwell def. Gigi Dolin & Cora Jade {Quarterfinal Match}
This is the first all-female match in 205 Live history, though Jake Ziegler tells me there has been at least one mixed tag on here before. Dolin & Jade’s Marilyn Manson knockoff music sounds familiar. I’m quite confident it’s been used before. It’s interesting to me that they signed three women and jammed them into the tournament immediately rather than try to use the tournament to give some of their longer term trainees TV time. Dolin looked pretty good, which isn’t surprising as she’d recently gotten a chance to show off against Thunder Rosa on that word NWA offshoot streaming show. Jade was more or less on par with Hartwell, who is still a step behind but kept it together here. Hartwell pinned Jade with a spinning slam at 5:54. **¼
Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher def. Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese {Opening Round Match}
I wonder if this was taped before NXT, and what the live fans thought it that was the case. Once the cruiserweight villains took over this got to be pretty fun. That only lasted a bit, as Ciampa rushed in to save Thatcher, and then Thatcher returned the favor to block the baddies from hitting a tandem aerial attack. Ciampa then casually hit Nese with Willow’s Bell for the win at 7:21. This team seems as good a use of these two as anything else they’ve done in the last few months. **¾
