Joe Coffey def. Sha Samuels
Samuels was introduced under a different name (Ed Harvey?) but he freaked out a couple minutes into the match and demanded he be recognized by his real gimmick. Well, I guess that’s a more memorable way to debut than just showing up. The fact that he put a solid beating on Coffey is more memorable than the typical debut as well. Nigel McGuinness is great on commentary, treating Samuels’ near-falls as world-shaking, surprising events. Coffey catches Samuels with AwRaBestFurThaBells to cut off his momentum and win the match at 6:41. Turned into a fun beat-em-up, which was nice since it was presented initially as a would-be squash. ***
Earlier this week, NXTUKAsstGM Sid Scala gets a phone call from NXTUKGM Johnny Saint when he’s visited by Pretty Deadly. Scala tells them that they’ll wrestle in a four way elimination tag match to determine the tag title contenders. It goes down in two weeks. Apparently that’s what Saint just confirmed on the phone. I’m not a fan of these convenient framing devices, but the match sounds fun. Then, Dave Mastiff approaches Rampage Brown in the gym and challenges him to a match. Neither guy wipes down the weights they use during a pandemic.
Tyler Bate def. Sam Gradwell
Andy Shepherd calls Gradwell a YouTube conspiracy theorist, which is a bigger insult than I think he realizes. Or maybe he does realize it; Gradwell is a heel after all. They kept this pretty basic, though Gradwell got a few stiff licks in on Bate. I also liked the way Bate used Bop & Bang from a fun angle to make his comeback. Bate hit the Tyler Driver ‘97 for the win at 7:14. **¾
Oliver Carter & Ashton Smith get notified that they’ll be in the four way. Kenny Williams & Amir Jordan train in the background, and Williams looks frustrated. Later, Ilja Dragunov challenges Jack Starz to a match because Starz is emblematic of starting over. Starz is not only not offended (though he should be), he gleefully suggests he might score an upset.
Jinny and Kay Lee Ray have a face to face. Joseph Conners is with Jinny. They say that Conners aligned with Jinny because she has money, power, and connections. So that’s meaningless. KLR says that she’s beaten everyone and will beat Jinny. Jinny points out that KLR only beat Piper Niven because she had Jinny’s help. I was worried she wouldn’t bring that up. Even still, they’ve given us no reason to cheer for the heel champion or heel challenger in next week’s match.
WALTER def. A-Kid {NXT UK Championship Match}
This match featured the nastiest Jon Woo Dropkick I’ve ever seen probably. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had actually paralyzed A-Kid. There was a lot of wild offense from both guys here. I don’t know if it would have made sense for this match to have gone on much longer, as WALTER had an answer for almost everything A-Kid did. Yes, A-Kid had some success going after WALTER’s leg, perhaps enough to get a rematch. But I think I’d still be more compelled by Dragunov’s journey from the bottom to end with him winning the title. WALTER hit a sliding lariat for the win at 13:51. WALTER is all but certain to break Dunne’s longevity record as champion thanks to this win. ****
