Bronson Reed def. Isaiah Scott
Neither guy should be losing here, and this episode is rather pointless; it’s the last one before a big show that’s largely already been set up, and it’s going up against a memorial show on AEW. Predicting ahead of time that Jake Atlas costs Scott the match because nothing else makes sense given NXT’s history. Nope, that doesn’t happen. Instead, Scott hits Reed with a cheap heabutt that worked against Atlas, but Reed no-sells it and hits the Tsunami for the win at 6:19. I like that this played off of Scott’s match the week before, but what’s the message here? That Scott can’t even cheat well enough to win? So he’s pretty much hopeless? It’s not working for me. **¼
They’re doing the Year End Awards on the air this week. I guess they always do it on the last episode of the year. Last year the episode was on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day so they didn’t run matches or anything. Anyway, whatever, Shotzi Blackheart wins Breakout Star of the Year over a group of other wrestlers who got sort of pushed but not really. Later, Johnny Gargano sees a black cat and gets worried that the curse that sees him never successfully defend a singles title will continue. Also, Atlas is friends with Leon Ruff now.
Zack Gibson & James Drake def. Fandango & Tyler Breeze
They announce that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic returns in two weeks. Good thing they pulled together a tag division just in time. This was kinda fun. It saw Breezango do some flashy flying to try to maintain control but the Grizzled Young Veterans wrestling nasty to win. That’s all I really want from tag wrestling. They’re pushing this idea that the GYV are knocking off former tag champs, which is a good story going into the tournament. They pinned Breeze with the Ticket to Mayhem at 9:01 (shown). Ever-Rise comes out to talk trash after the match, but they run from a fight. ***
Undisputed Era wins Tag Team of the Year for the third year in a row. I like this crew but it’s time for them to move on. Also, they were only tag champs for the first month of the year. Sure, they’re more important than the teams that were champs for longer periods of time (man, Imperium and Breezango’s title reigns were awful), but this puts on a spotlight on how far the division fell this year. Adam Cole and Roderick Strong will rep the team in the Dusty Cup this year. Then, Boa and Xia Li graduate from torture class. They return next week. The show devoted a ton of time to this, so I hope these two get a push in earnest. Since it seemingly means the return of Karen Q as well, I kind of wish they’d do a tag tournament for the women (Q and Li being a team sparked the thought) with the winners getting a shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. You’d only have to give an NXT team a reign once, even if it’s a shorty, to legitimize the idea. Do it.
Mercedes Martinez def. Valentina Feroz
Feroz debuted as Rita Reis in a pre-pandemic battle royal on TV. What a bummer of a time to be getting your career started in this company. This is a squash. Martinez wins at 2:22 with the Air Raid Crash. N/A
Io Shirai wins Female Competitor of the Year. She was the champ for most of the year, so that tracks. Adam Cole wins Male Competitor of the Year. I guess, though the back half of the year has been super dead for him. Later, Shirai wins Overall Competitor of the Year.
Pete Dunne def. Roderick Strong
If NXT was so inclined, they’d have a great story brewing here as Dunne is now 4-0 over Strong in singles matches in NXT. Especially now that Dunne is a heel and Strong is a de facto babyface, this would be a great time to put the big belt on Dunne and have Strong challenge at a Takeover. I don’t think I’d have Strong win the title, but losing in a big match and then finally beating Dunne after he lost the title to someone else would be good fun. This was the least interesting of the four matches between the two, but still better than most wrestling matches in the world. Dunne hit the Bitter End pretty much out of nowhere at 10:03 (shown) for the win. ***¼
Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly wins Match of the Year. It was the second best match of the year, but that’s pretty close. Balor says he’ll give O’Reilly his golden bell in person. Then he runs into Dunne on his way to the ring. Nothing comes of that (yet?). O’Reilly comes out as well. I just learned from watching the Andre the Giant doc on HBO that Hulk Hogan got his name because Vince McMahon wanted him to draw Irish American fans. It’s too bad for these two that wrestling doesn’t work that way now. Karrion Kross & Scarlett come out to warn that the winner of next week’s title match is just keeping the belt warm for Kross. Damian Priest returns and brawls with Kross. This was pretty productive, and we seemingly learned a bit about Kross & Scarlett’s private life.
Did you know that Raquel Gonzalez and Rhea Ripley used to be best friends? They even have matching tattoos of their initials on their fingers. Gonzalez suggests that the friendship may have been a ruse to get inside Ripley’s head. This was a great video and I’m very interested in their match next week. Turning their RNR tattoo into RVR to hype the match was sick. Why can’t they do this kind of thing up and down the card?
Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado def. Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza
I don’t watch 205 Live (I think Jake Ziegler is probably the only person who does), but I know that on the 205th episode, Curt Stallion earned a shot at the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. They pushed that contendership quietly for over a month but now they’ve seemingly dropped it. I’m not mad at a Lucha House Party vs. Legado del Fantasma feud, as it makes sense that LHP would be mad at Santos Escobar’s rhetoric about lucha libre. I just wish storylines didn’t get dropped for no reason. The match is joined in progress. This was a fun sprint that saw Metalik earn a title shot at New Year’s Evil by pinning Mendoza with a diving elbowdrop at 3:53 (shown). Yep, he earned a title shot instead of the guy who already had a title shot by pinning a friend of the champion in a tag match. This division is in bad shape. And honestly, I’d rather see Shirai vs. Toni Storm for that title next week than a match for this title. **½
Austin Theory wins Future Star of the Year. Yikes. I do like that he’s still carrying the Gargano Whey jar. If that doesn’t turn into a powder throwing foreign object then this company is dead to me. You have one month, or else. Theory brings up the curse, which freaks out Gargano and triggers him into throwing the jar at a mirror, which breaks. Oopsie doopsie. He walks under a ladder as he storms away, but the rest of the Way doesn’t tell him.
Johnny Gargano def. Leon Ruff {NXT North American Championship Match}
I liked this a lot. Ruff got to show off quite a bit before falling to Gargano’s Final Beat at 11:46 (shown). I think they’ve handled Ruff really well, and I’ll say again I hope he doesn’t get lost in the shuffle after this. In fact, I’d have him be the one to beat Escobar for the title since Escobar vs. Jordan Devlin isn’t something that can happen for a while. I’d wonder who is next for Gargano and this title, but I think the Way is going to be a part of the Dusty Cup for the next couple of months. ***½
Dexter Lumis runs down the New Year’s Evil card with his doodles to end the show.
