Jordan Devlin def. Oliver Carter {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
This started out pretty hinky, but they got their acts together a couple minutes in. What started as Devlin going hard after the neck very slowly turned into a quicker-paced war of attrition. Devlin got the win with the Devlin Side at 6:30, which followed a reverse hurricanrana. So yeah, it was psychologically sound, and I’m glad Devlin is getting these emphatic wins, but I’d like something competitive for him to do. **¼
Jinny isn’t going to talk about Piper Niven, but she is going to attack her. But then her whole promo is only about Niven so what the hell did any of that mean? Later, the Hunt and Eddie Dennis demand Sid Scala give a tag title shot to the Hunt. Scala calls Gallus fighting champions, which is insane given that the show has been back for three months and there have been no tag title matches. Anyway, that no-defense streak ends next week. Earlier this week, Saxon Huxley rampaged at the UK Performance Center after attacking Jack Starz and Levi Muir.
Noam Dar hosts the first Supernova Sessions. Since there’s no one in the crowd, I’m disappointed that this isn’t a highly-produced daytime talk show spoof rather than a “live” segment in the studio. A-Kid is the guest. The funny bit is that Dar sits on a plush couch with a wide variety of tasty treats at his side, while A-Kid sits in a folding chair next to some water and nuts. Dar dubs himself A-Kid’s mentor and says it’s time he changed his name to A-Man. A-Kid says that Tyler Bate is his actual mentor. Bate finally makes his return and laments not being a part of the tournament. Dar stirs the pot between the two, suggesting that A-Kid defend the Heritage Cup tonight. A-Kid is happy to oblige. This had just a touch of a Between Two Ferns vibe that I hope they develop.
Xia Brookside def. Isla Dawn
This is a rematch from a surprisingly good little match these two had almost two years ago. Brookside is looking shredded. Dawn is more aggressive here than she was the first time these two met, and Brookside reponds in kind. That gives this match more of a story but isn’t as notable as the technical style of their first go. It’s solid though, much more interesting than the typical undercard women’s division match in NXT UK. Sadly, this ends with the crummiest of finishes, as Nina Samuels shows up on the screen to distract Brookside and Dawn hits a backdrop driver for the win at 5:26. Pretty sloppy that the same finishing move ended both matches so far tonight. Nobody cares about Samuels. **¼
A-Kid def. Tyler Bate {NXT UK Heritage Cup Match}
As much as I like a surprise Bate match after not seeing him for so long, I wish they’d built up to this a bit so that I could believe that Bate might win the cup. It’s all (very good) chain wrestling in the first round. More of the same in the second round. A-Kid blocks the airplane spin in the third round and hits a scary German suplex. Bate comes back immediately with a roll up to win his first fall at 2:47 of the round. The fun and games end as the fourth round begins, as A-Kid hits a high kick and Bate loses his temper. A-Kid catches Bate with a sleeper hold and turns it into a triangle choke, but Bate hits a powerbomb as the round ends. A-Kid catches Bate with a moonsault into a DDT to win a fall at 1:00 of the fifth round. It’s pretty amazing how uncontrived that looked. The sixth round is furiously paced, and sees Kid squeak out a win with another roll up at 2:04. Again, it was hard to feel like the title was in danger because of the impromptu nature of the match so soon after A-Kid’s tournament win, but the work was top notch. I’m so happy Bate is back. ***½
