Dakota Kai def. Ember Moon
I did not see this win for Kai coming. On the one hand, this isn’t good for giving Moon momentum on the back of her return. On the other hand, I don’t find Moon all that interesting and I think Kai is underutilized, so there’s that. Plus Raquel Gonzalez distracted Moon leading to the finish, so you’d assume this feud will continue. The match was pretty good, went longer than I expected, and as I mentioned had a surprising finish. Kai hit the Go2Kick for the win at 12:49 (shown). ***
Cameron Grimes is still spooked, and he makes mention of the fact that he didn’t actually lose a match at Halloween Havoc. Then, Shotzi Blackheart explains that she asked to wrestle Toni Storm tonight so she could be tested.
Kushida def. Cameron Grimes
Neither guy really gets an entrance. Kai didn’t really get an entrance either. Looks like they’re trying to get a lot of ring time in tonight. This was a fine little match, if nothing you’d ever remember. Then the finish was very odd. Grimes took out one referee, and the replacement was the Blair Witch screaming zombie referee in the haunted house last week. Grimes got scared and Kushida put on the Hoverboard Lock for the win at 10:30 (shown). What are we to understand happened in the haunted house? Was the ref in on the gag and all the zombies were in makeup? That takes some of the fun out of it, but at least makes it make sense. I don’t know. I didn’t like the finish here. **¾
Io Shirai wants to defend the title against Rhea Ripley.
Drake Maverick & Killian Dane nc. Matt Martel & Chase Parker
We’re not meant to pay attention to this match, as the tag champs, Pete Dunne, and Pat McAfee arrive at the building and the in-ring segment is relegated to half the screen. They interfere at 3:54 and the match is thrown out. They call themselves the best four-man group in wrestling history. Spicy. They remind everyone that Roderick Strong turned on Dunne to join the Undisputed Era, and that’s why he attacked Kyle O’Reilly. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch broke bad because they were tired of being overlooked in favor of the Undisputed Era. Then they burn a UE flag. Then Dunne beats the crap out of Dane when he tries to attack them. N/A
Johnny Gargano and the scream mask person are playing the game of Life in Gargano’s house. He’s lost both of his NXT singles titles in his first defense, but this time he’s going to make a successful defense against a worthy opponent. Look for it to be some geek.
Toni Storm def. Shotzi Blackheart
Blackheart rushes out, shouting at Storm because she thinks Storm stole her tank. Then she botches a springboard but the commentators do a nice job of explaining it away. Like the opener, this one was pretty solid but had just a garbage finish. Candice LeRae popped up on the side screen and distracted Blackheart by admitting that she had the tank. The distraction gave Storm the win with a roll up at 9:57 (shown). LeRae runs over the tank with a hummer, the scream mask person in the backseat. She says they’re even now. **½
Legado del Fantasma tries to attack Jake Atlas in the parking lot, but he fights them off and drives away. Then, Timothy Thatcher’s Thatch as Thatch can session is interrupted by an attack from Austin Grey, which is Anthony Greene’s new name. Then, Xia Li says the mysterious letter she received is from her family, and that she wants to fight Gonzalez next week as revenge for the attack two weeks ago.
Tommaso Ciampa def. Velveteen Dream
If this is as good as their Takeover match I’ll eat my dog’s food. This was kind of a squash, actually. It was good (though not even good enough to stand in the shadow of the Takeover match), but there was no point when Dream even got close to winning. Ciampa tore through him, hitting Willow’s Bell and the Fairy Tale Ending at 13:02 (shown) for the win. And that’s that. I have to wonder what the hell they think they’re doing with Dream. If you’re worried about the reaction he’s been getting online and sometimes in the arena because of the accusations against him, then just take him off TV. If you want to ignore all that and power through with him, then do it. But this weird middle ground of having him as a loose presence on some shows and then having him get taken out like this in a breezy main event just doesn’t feel productive to me. It’s not like this made it clear what’s next for Ciampa after this, so where are we even? ***¼
This show felt very light, though there are two title matches next week and a big women’s title match coming up. I guess since it’s election week it doesn’t matter because who cares about wrestling right now? Might as well just slowly but surely move the plot forward.
