October 29, 2020 – Newham, London
They’ve been building to the main event of this show all year (not by choice), so there’s a lot at stake. With Pete Dunne having returned to the United States, it has me thinking more than before that Ilja Dragunov will be taking the title off of WALTER. He’s been so dominant in the build to the match that I was thinking WALTER would retain, but now there’s nobody else to be the lead babyface.
Aoife Valkyrie def. Dani Luna
There was a weird moment early on where Thunderdome-style fan windows showed up on the big screen. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how that would work since this match was presumably taped forever ago and there have been no spoilers anywhere. Then the windows disappeared after a minute and it became clear it was a glitch. Valkyrie looked very bad here. She was hesitant to move quickly and she was the opposite of expressive anytime she was in trouble. She basically looked like she was thinking about what to do next the whole time. Luna fared a little better, so it’s unfortunate that it’s Valkyrie getting the push. Valkyrie hit the Peripeteia for the win at 6:07. *¼
Rampage Brown is coming to NXT UK. He used to team with Ashton Smith in Progress. Smith and a couple of others hype him up. Then, we get a reminder of the mystery attacks on Mark Andrews and Flash Morgan Webster. I would give up my dog’s favorite toys for them to kill this trope.
Webster & Andrews confront Eddie Dennis in the ring. Dennis says that Andrews used him on the indies and that he’s using Webster now. He says it was Andrews who attacked Webster because he didn’t want him to break out as a singles competitor. Pretty Deadly comes out to back Dennis, and then the Hunt comes out to back Flash Mandrews. But then the Hunt attacks Flash Mandrews. The Hunt were backstage during both attacks, so at least they knew where they were going with this. Heel turns are tough without a crowd but HOLY CRAP Primate got into crazy good shape during the hiatus. Hold on though… why bother with the Andrews attacker feint if you’re going to have the Hunt more or less reveal that they were the attackers right away.
Piper Niven threatens to injure Kay Lee Ray. Then, Sid Scala is approached by Pretty Deadly. They want a tag title shot. Sam Gradwell and his Jack from Tekken hair pop in to say some nonsense. Gallus wanders up and reminds Scala that when Joe Coffey returns next week they’ll be back at full strength. That segment felt like something out of Being the Elite. I don’t care for Being the Elite.
Jordan Devlin def. Levi Muir
Interesting that they’d bring back Devlin and make a big deal of him still being the NXT Cruiserweight Champion and then have him wrestle such a muscle bound guy. This was a slow squash. Devlin put on a Cloverleaf for the win at 4:49. Get it? Because he’s Irish. At five minutes this was twice as long as it should have been, and felt twice as long as it was. Devlin tells the top cruiserweights to come to England to get a shot at the real champ. N/A
WALTER def. Ilja Dragunov {NXT UK Championship Match}
The Thunderdome fan windows are back. Why? They give up on it after a few minutes. They started this at the end, with Dragunov coming out firing missiles, going for the Torpedo Moskau, and getting hit with a sleeper suplex. And from there they never let up on each other at all. Nigel McGuinness calls out legends of All Japan to express how he feels about this match and it couldn’t be more appropriate. From the brutal strikes throughout to Dragunov’s channeling of Mitsuharu Misawa with consecutive enziguiris, this was as good an ode to the style as I’ve seen from non-Japanese wrestlers. I was jumping out of my seat so many times hoping that Dragunov would win this thing, and so many near-falls were incredible. In the end, WALTER put Dragunov down with a crazy, bloody sleeper hold at 25:09. I’m only upset because I now wonder what this could have been in front of the Dublin crowd for which it was meant. Earlier I said that Dragunov almost had to win here with Dunne gone for the States, but now I’m just hoping, praying, begging for a rematch. This was easily the best match in NXT UK’s short history, the best match in WWE this year, and in my opinion the easy Match of the Year for 2020. *****
