October 7, 2020 – Orlando, Florida
Wade Barrett is actually at the announce table tonight, and there’s no stand in for Beth Phoenix. That was such a weird, stupid move.
Tommaso Ciampa def. Kushida
Apparently these guys got into a fight backstage before the show, but they show no footage of it. If it doesn’t happen on TV then it didn’t happen and I don’t care for it. It feels like they’re slotting Kushida into the feud that Ciampa was going to have with O’Reilly, which hopefully means that Kushida goes over in the end. This suffered greatly because the weird crowd was almost completely silent for it. The action was alright, but the finish was also garbage as Velveteen Dream interfered and hit CIampa by mistake and got Kushida disqualified at 11:07 (shown of 14:30). I’m almost impressed because I couldn’t think of a less sensical finish even if I had all afternoon to think of one. **½
Ember moon is in the ring and the crowd makes way more noise for her than they did for the match. If you have a crowd of what is essentially plants, why can’t you make them be loud for everything? She tries to lampshade her bad promo, and is thankfully cut off by Io Shirai. Rhea Ripley comes out before Shirai can speak, but she’s quickly attacked by Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai. NXT GM William Regal shows up in person for the first time since the pandemic started and books a tag team main event. Shirai is not included in said match and didn’t say a word on the microphone, so why the hell was she in this segment? This episode is a mess so far.
Drake Maverick assumes he’s in a real tag team with Killian Dain, but Dain insists they’re not a team. Maverick tells him he got them booked in a match against Ever-Rise. Dain is frustrated and flustered. It feels like they’re neutering Dain too early into this program, but that might be my feelings on the episode up to this point talking. I’m willing to see how the match plays out before judging. Later, Shirai says she didn’t get involved because she’s just focused on the title. Still dumb to have her out there. Then, the Undisputed Era tries to build back Kyle O’Reilly’s self esteem and promise revenge on Ridge Holland.
Killian Dain & Drake Maverick def. Chase Parker & Matt Martel
Maverick & Dain have a cute tag team entrance song that Dain is furious about. Dain doesn’t want to tag in until Martel makes the mistake of hitting him with an afterthought elbow. Dain tags in and beats up Ever-Rise, but Maverick tags in before Dain can put on the finishing touch. Dain powerbombs Mavering onto Parker for the win at 4:04. It was all gimmick and no steak (I know that doesn’t mean anything), but it got the point across. The tonal shift from Dain being dangerous to Dain being a reluctant partner is a bit jarring. Dain knocks out Maverick after the match, but then carries him to the back. *¾
We see Toni Storm’s journey back to NXT. She’d been hanging out in Cancun, off the radar. This was simple and I liked it. I hope they don’t screw this up. Then, they bring up that Johnny Gargano has wrestled at 20 Takeovers. That’s gotta be leading to something about how he’s lost at almost all of them, right? The Garganos are upset about their performances on Sunday and they want rematches. They get home to find that Indi Hartwell has bought them a new 65” TV.
Austin Theory def. Leon Ruff
Ruff’s official signing was announced today, along with a handful of other former EVOLVE guys. He’s still a job guy though. Theory won in 1:49 with whatever his finisher is called now. After the match, Theory rips on Cole for being injured. Dexter Lumis comes out with slightly worse music and a match randomly breaks out. N/A
Dexter Lumis def. Austin Theory
So it’s the Cameron Grimes/Holland segment recycled one week later. Were they asleep when they booked this episode? The commentators talk about how Lumis absorbs pain better than others during his first match back after being out for months with an injury. Oh my god, I just saw that WWE tweeted that line. They’re actually proud of their unforced errors. This was your typical, boring Lumis match, which he won with the Anaconda Vice at 8:@3 (shown of 12:18). Grimes ran out to hit Lumis with the Cave in after the match. Apparently he’s angry that Lumis didn’t reply to him when they ran into each other backstage last week. Blech. **¼
Finn Balor’s jaw is broken. They sort of dance around how that will affect his title reign. Earlier, Holland says he got a Mercedes Benz for attacking Cole. After the break, the commentators suggest that someone paid Holland off.
Ridge Holland def. Danny Burch
Holland won this quick n dirty match in 2:08 with the Northern Grit. It was fun while it lasted. Burch gets up after the match and asks for more, and Holland is happy to give it to him.Oney Lorcan tries to make the save and gets into a pull apart fight with Holland. I’m actually shocked that they let Lorcan get an even fight in. Holland appears to have actually gotten injured during the fight, though he gives a thumbs up as he’s stretchered out. Hope he’s okay and so much for that angle. *¾
Gargano is watching his new TV, which came with a USB that contained footage of Hartwell saving LeRae over and over in the battle royal a couple weeks ago. I didn’t notice it turning that match and I’m way too impressed that NXT actually booked a medium-term angle within a match. The bar to impress me with wrestling in 2020 is so low. Then, Timothy Thatcher tells his students to attack first and understand that losses define you less than the pain you inflict.
Shotzi Blackheart def. Xia Li
Blackheart wins this quickie with a diving senton at 1:46. Boa comes out after the match and hands Li a letter. I didn’t know that dude was still employed. N/A
Ember Moon & Rhea Ripley def. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez
Moon looked as good as I’ve ever seen her here. Things got a little sloppy near the end and Vic Joseph got in the way of the camera for an announce table spot down the stretch, but this was actually a really solid tag team main event. Moon hit Kai with the Eclipse for the win at 8:00 (shown of 11:30). That was also one of the only times that the Eclipse didn’t look contrived. I’m not sure where Ripley goes from here though, as she was totally overshadowed by Moon. ***¼
This episode was a disaster, but the main event was fun. At least there was that. I’m pretty worried for the program going forward.
