Shotzi Blackheart def. Dakota Kai
This was fun, though Blackheart is still kind of reckless in the ring. At one point she went for a Shiranui on the apron and smashed her own head on the damn thing. This ended how you’d expect; Raquel Gonzalez tripped Blackheart, Rhea Ripley ran out to attack Gonzalez, and in all the commotion Blackheart rolled up Kai for the win at 9:34 (shown of 13:09). ***
Isaiah Scott thinks that he’s more talented than Santos Escobar, and in a fair fight he’d win. Escobar says that at Takeover, their match will be fair and he’ll retain the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. They say more things, but it’s kind of boring and it lost my attention. Then, they show another night vision promo for Bo Dallas’s return to NXT, probably. Then, they show a Prime Target package on Kyle O’Reilly so that he’s a babyface going into Takeover. He says the Undisputed Era will stick together after he wins the title and begin the second wave of the UE Golden Prophecy. That’d be boring, so let’s hope something more happens. Then, they say that Tegan Nox is out of action for a while with a torn ACL. That woman sucks at ACLs. Then, the Garganos show off their matching track jackets and promise to become the first married couple to become champions at the same time on Sunday. Candice’s makeup makes her look green.
Cameron Grimes def. Joey Pistachio {Cameron Grimes Invitations Stepping Stones to the Moon Match}
Grimes put this would-be gauntlet match together as a way of complaining about last week’s contender match stipulation. He beats Pistachio in about seven seconds with the Cave In. N/A
Cameron Grimes def. Ridge Holland
Holland beat up Joey Strong, the scheduled second man in the gauntlet, to take on Grimes here. Holland stomped Grimes until the referee disqualified him after 36 seconds of action. Grimes is very over, so it seems dumb to sacrifice him to Holland. Also, what even is Holland’s gimmick. He can’t control himself? Why would he even be interested in fighting Grimes? This didn’t land for me. N/A
Austin Theory craps on how long it took O’Reilly so long to get an NXT Championship match. Then, they hype Kushida vs. Velveteen Dream at Takeover. If Kushida doesn’t win then I give up. Later, Grimes moans while looking for William Regal, but runs into Dexter Lumis instead. Nothing happens.
Kushida def. Tony Nese
This was two minutes of Kushida beating up Nese’s arm before tapping him with the Hoverboard Lock. Nese went down at 2:12. Because Kushida is vicious now, you see. After the match, Dream gets on the big screen and tells Kushida that he’ll fail under the big lights of Takeover. N/A
Adam Cole def. Austin Theory
Cole called out Theory because he was tired of people trash talking the Undisputed Era as if there’d be no repercussions. This match makes me think I probably overrated their EVOLVE match from last year. This was brief, but it had a good story that saw Theory be a blow hard, talking trash while on offense, and then be completely overwhelmed by the former NXT Champion. I can’t remember anything about the EVOLVE match, but there are bits from this that I think will stay with me for a while. Cole hit the Last Shot for the win at 9:28 (shown of 13:01). ***¼
Kayden Carter def. Xia Li
Li continues her journey to being a heel. He fought with more aggression here and then shoved Carter and Kacy Catanzaro after the match. Carter got a roll up for the win at 3:05. *¾
In a ring in a dark room, O’Reilly and Balor sit down with Shawn Michaels for a chat. O’Reilly says that Balor’s defeat is certain. Balor wants to know if O’Reilly can do this without help from the Undisputed Era. O’Reilly is vague, but says that the title match is about him, not his stable. There’s more, and it’s not bad, and it didn’t assure me that O’Reilly is actually turning babyface. I guarantee that everyone else reviewing this episode will make a joke about how it’s better than the presidential debate the night before. Hacks.
Candice LeRae & Johnny Gargano def. Damian Priest & Io Shirai
They do a really nice job of making both teams look very cohesive during their entrances. This was a hell of a good time packed into a very small package. They did excellent work with the gimmick, having Shirai get small shots in at Gargano throughout the match, only for that medicine to get fed back to her partner when LeRae hit a low blow on Priest near the end. Gargano capitalized and hit the Final Beat DDT on Priest to win at 7:45 (shown of 10:15). ***½
I had a hard time getting through this episode, as the first hour dragged like crazy between the opener and Theory vs. Cole. This has been a very abrupt Takeover build, but some of the matches have a lot of potential.
