August 22, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
Tyler Breeze & Fandango def. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch and Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza {Triple Threat Number One Contenders Match}
There was very little to this one, as is often the case with pre-show matches. The whole match was move, cover, break up. Rise and repeat. Nothing to get excited over. Breeze hit a Supermodel Kick on Lorcan for the win at 6:56. **½
Finn Balor def. Timothy Thatcher
Thatcher controlled on the mat whenever they went there. Every time Balor looked to escape, Thatcher would knee him in the side or something like that. That is super neat. Balor won with the 1916 at 13:34. He was a good choice to pair with Thatcher. The grappling was never dull. The early leg work came back and made things dangerous for Balor. It wasn’t quite excellent, but it drew me in for 13. ***½
Damian Priest def. Johnny Gargano, Cameron Grimes, Velveteen Dream, and Bronson Reed {NXT North American Championship Ladder Match}
There are new entrance music remixes for Gargano and Reed. Grimes is really coming into his own as a comedy wrestler, or at least a wrestler who is funny. The first six minutes were exceptionally well coordinated. I actually liked this a lot more than I like most ladder matches (I was really not looking forward to this), except for when Priest and Dream went for dives when it would have made more sense for them to go for the win. There were a few times the match could have ended, which would have made it feel more concise and cohesive. But it was a hell of a spectacle. At first I wasn’t sure what Candice LeRae interfering added to the match, but then it made Gargano look like more of a snake. Plus her bump on top of Reed was dope. Priest won at 21:25. ****
Adam Cole def. Pat McAfee
At the end of the day, the problem here is that they’re both heels. So who cares? McAfee didn’t do anything embarrassing, and actually did a solid job of keeping up with Cole. The seams were DEFINITELY showing, especially at the finish, but for a guy with practically zero experience he did a good job. I just don’t understand who I was meant to be rooting for here. Neither guy gave me a reason to during the match. Well, except maybe for McAfee’s crazy backflip and superplex, because that was neat. If McAfee had been booked as a babyface and wrestled as a babyface here, this would have been a great match (except for the finish). As it is, it was just pretty good. Also, as I’ve mentioned twice because it’s worth repeating, the finish was very bad, as a clearly fully conscious McAfee just walked into place for the Panama Sunrise all on camera. That got Cole the win at 16:12. Good match, really embarrassing finish, correct result. ***
Io Shirai def. Dakota Kai {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Shirai won in 17:17 with the moonsault. I think Over the Moonsault is a stupid name for what is just a moonsault. There was a hell of a lot to like here. Kai going back to the arm over and over was good. The action was mostly fast paced and intense. The Raquel Gonzalez interference was well done. It was a little sloppy in places, but not enough to take me out of it for long stretches. Shirai is a winner as champion, she just needs to cut out the superfluous handsprings. Gonzalez attacked after the match but Rhea Ripley ran out to stare her down. Sucks to be Mercedes Martinez, I guess. ****
NXT UK is back. I’m sure it will be kind of rotten in an empty arena, but I’m so happy to not have to review clip shows anymore. Mustache Mountain is conspicuous in their absence from the advertisement. Tommaso Ciampa is also back, but on regular NXT this Wednesday. Priest celebrates in a hot tub with Brandi Lauren and another girl.
Karrion Kross def. Keith Lee {NXT Championship Match}
The video package for this match is the best one they’ve done in a long time. This was a solid heavyweight slug-em-up, but not a great one. Kross isn’t a wrestler in the style of NXT, and he got injured here, so it had a lot going against it as a main event. As such, I don’t think it needed to go twenty minutes, but I suppose that helped to keep Lee strong in the loss. I was never bored, but I never felt my butt fall off either. Kross won the title with a second rope Doomsday Saito Suplex at 21:50. Hopefully it’s just a matter of time before Lee ends up on Raw or Smackdown. ***
For a show I was down on in the lead-up to it, it was pretty good.
