Dakota Kai def. Rhea Ripley {Number One Contender Match}
This was very one-sided. It was also backwards, as Ripley worked this like a heel and kept Kai on defense looking for sympathetic comebacks. She controlled with a scowl during the commercial break in the inset, but only people who watched when this first aired (or DVRd it I guess) could notice that. Even still, this was quite good. I loved that even though Ripley dominated, there was never a time that she stopped looking for the pin. I wasn’t sure how they’d get out of the corner they’d written themselves into here, but Mercedes Martinez was the answer. She came out of nowhere and booted Ripley behind the referee’s back, allowing Kai to hit the Go2Kick at 12:12 (shown of 15:48). The finish was stapled loosely and didn’t do the great match any favors, but it gives Ripley something to do coming out of this at least. Martinez attacks Ripley some more after the match. ***¾
Bronson Reed def. Shane Thorne
I feel kind of bad for Thorne. He’s been in NXT forever, he’s pretty good (definitely better than Dexter Lumis), and the best he can hope for is to be enhancement fodder for his buddy Reed. Reed won at 4:31 with the Tsunami. **½
Earlier today, Legado del Fantasma attacked Breezango in the parking lot and kidnapped Fandango. Later, Robert Stone says that Martinez attacked her because the Robert Stone Brand isn’t done with her. They feuded up to the Great American Bash, ‘member? Also, after last week’s triple threat match, Finn Balor attacked Timothy Thatcher. Lumis is rumored to be injured too. Could there be a singles match to determine who gets Lumis’s spot at Takeover? I hope so.
Damian Priest def. Oney Lorcan and Ridge Holland {Triple Threat Semifinal Match}
Seems the Brits are slowly but surely starting to come to the States. That doesn’t bode super well for NXT UK, but it could be good news for this show. It has been pointed out that Holland has been in the crowd on these NXT shows for a while, so it could be a minute until any British imports show up on TV. My prediction was that Holland would get to do his Brock Lesnar impression here and then be absent from the ring when Priest (my favorite to win the North American title) beat Lorcan. And that’s exactly what happened. Wrestling is easy. First Priest took out Holland with a chokeslam and then pinned Lorcan with the Reckoning at 6:43 (shown of 10:16). They didn’t get a lot of screen time, but what they got was filled with fun, hard hitting action. ***
I just noticed that Kona Reeves is wearing a Kikutaro mask in the crowd. That’s something I love so much on someone I loathe so much. Anyway, Adam Cole and Pat McAfee have apparently buried the hatchet and McAfee will be on commentary for the tag team main event. Right.
Keith Lee def. Cameron Grimes
Grimes continues to serve his purpose, making people on the rise look good. He’s basically a more talented Elias. I don’t think Lee really needed ten minutes to make the dominant point he made here, but it wasn’t boing so I guess I’m picking nits. Lee won at 6:58 (shown of 10:30) with the Spirit Bomb. After the match, Karrion Kross has taken out a bunch of people backstage and says that it’s on Lee. He thinks Lee hasn’t put enough pressure on NXT GM William Regal to give him a title match. **½
Lumis is indeed injured, but he’ll be replaced by the winner of a four way match featuring four men who weren’t pinned in the triple threat matches so far. That works for me.
Legado del Fantasma comes out dragging an unconscious Fandango. They took him out because he ridiculed lucha libre with his entrance costume. Tyler Breeze tries to make the save and gets wrecked. Santos Escobar tells Isaiah Scott to keep his name out of his mouth.
They show a video of great moments in the Undisputed Era’s history, set to Imperium’s entrance music. That was super weird, but the commentators explain that the UE chose the music to screw with the tag champs. Later, Priest condescends to Reed in the parking lot, calling him a fluke and saying he can’t win at Takeover. They’ll fight next week no doubt.
Tegan Nox def. Indi Hartwell
McAfee jumps on commentary here. They actually show him and Tom at the announce table while Mauro Ranallo and Beth Phoenix continue to jump in remotely. It’s pretty jarring, and could have worked if they didn’t cut to McAfee on camera or if they’d just admitted that Ranallo and Phoenix were stuck in Canada. They telegraphed that Candice LeRae would be interfering in this match at the outset by showing an angry tweet before the match. Hartwell brags about beating Shotzi Blackheart before the bell, which is continuity I can get behind. The commentators talked more about McAfee’s vacation tan than they did about the match, which was really just a squash. Nox won in 3:03 with the Shining Wizard. LeRae didn’t interfere after all. N/A
Grimes, Kushida, and a mystery opponent will fight next week in the next qualifying triple threat match. Danny Burch was one of the people Kross attacked tonight, so they’ll fight next week too. And so will Priest and Reed, officially.
Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel def. Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
It seems like the story here is more about McAfee and Cole burying the hatchet than it is about what should be the mercy killing of the lame duck tag champions. McAfee continues calling Cole small on commentary while the former champ is within earshot of him, causing Phoenix to be offended and leave the broadcast. Because who cares about the main event when you’ve got a non-wrestler angle to push? I guess this is their way of turning Cole babyface? If you have Cole fight heels he instantly becomes a babyface. You don’t need this distraction. O’Reilly was doing wild shit here, clearly feeling it after his hiatus and it’s a shame that the storyline wasn’t focused on it. Then we just abandon the match entirely as Cole flips out on McAfee and Triple H & Shawn Michaels try to separate them. The distraction allows Imperium to hit Fish with the European Bomb at 8:14 shown of 10:46. And then after the match McAfee finds more ways to call Cole tiny and then knocks him out with a punt kick. He was an NFL punter, you see. This was all the worst (except for the attempt at a good match), and I’m not sure who they thought would be into it. **
