Back at it again in Andy Shepherd’s living room. It’s just a random assortment of NXT UK matches this week.

Zack Gibson def. Noam Dar
Gibson chose this one, I think the first time someone has chosen their own match. Maybe that’s the theme today. There’s a cute moment where Dar tries to get his boot off because the crowd takes off their shoes to show how much they hate Gibson. He also tries to take off Gibson’s boot. This kid is fun as a babyface. They’ve really let Dar shine as much as he’s able with really long matches both times out so far. I bought a count out tease for the first time in a long time here, which was followed immediately by a believable tap tease. That was followed by a bit of a dead stretch, which is my only knock on the otherwise incredibly hard-fought match (and a common issue is Gibson’s big matches when he stops the match dead for character stuff). Gibson hit the Helter Skelter for the win at 21:10. At the time I’d hoped we’d be seeing a lot of twenty-minute matches between guys wanting to really show off on NXT UK, but it only wound up happening rarely. ****
We get a reminder that Flash Morgan Webster and Mark Andrews exist. They were stoked to win the tag titles, but then they lost them, lost in round one of the Dusty Cup, and then Andrews got injured. Andrews looks forward to finding out who attacked him. This is where WWE thinks their audience is made of the most dumb people on the planet. Not sure how they expect us to believe all these people get attacked on-site and don’t see who did it to them. Fuck off.
Kay Lee Ray def. Xia Brookside, Rhea Ripley, Piper Niven, Candy Floss, Killer Kelly, Jinny, Isla Dawn, Jazzy Gabert, Nina Samuels, Rhio, and Kanji {Number One Contender Battle Royal}
Yeah, KLR picked this one. Thankfully, a lot of the entrances happened during a commercial break (unlike at Worlds Collide when they showed all of them and bored me to death). The only drawback is that Rhio and Kanji are debuting here and I could have used entrances from them to give me a sense of their personalities. They’re the first two eliminated (by Gebert) so maybe I shouldn’t expect much from them. KLR got tossed between the ropes early, spent most of the match on the floor, and then came back at the end to win the thing by last eliminating Brookside (who had seemingly won by eliminating Niven and Ripley) at 8:41. Niven & Brookside got a huge reaction when they teamed up to eliminate Gabert and then Jinny. This was a really well-structured battle royal, playing up the various storylines going on, and highlighting that this brand has three distinct and interesting women’s angles happening at once. What other mixed-gender wrestling company is doing that? Even Kelly seemingly botching her exit from the match is made to help Ripley look like a monster. All battle royals should be this well-planned out. ***¼
Jinny says that no other woman came in with a bang like her. Umm, we just saw KLR (who debuted after Jinny) gear up for her title win, so. This promo is delivered well but the words are absolute nonsense. “I’m going to show that there’s only one woman in NXT UK.” That’s just false and improvable.
January 2, 2020 – Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire
Ilja Dragunov def. Alexander Wolfe {No Disqualification Match}
Dragunov got us caught up on what led to this match. This match wins for most creative use of a kendo stick in my memory. Once the chairs got involved things got a little less interesting, as especially the Van Terminator spot was too contrived. Things picked back up after that, with Wolfe brutalizing Dragunov, but the student remaining resilient and coming back for more. Overall, I liked their first match better. It flowed more smoothly and had more defined roles. I appreciate how different this was from that, but the action was a bit choppy and Wolfe didn’t get to shine as much (though his mastery at swinging around a kendo stick was neat). That said, it was clearly about making Dragunov look good, and the broken-handed comeback to win the match was fun. Dragunov got the win with the Torpedo Moskau at 14:51. Imperium runs in and beats up Dragunov after the match. Joe Coffey lays out WALTER and then runs off. ***½
More random matches next week. This show is basically dead at this point.
