July 15, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
Want to get your new double champion over? Start the show after he wins the big belt by having every male member of the roster tell him they’re coming for the title after his gold in a video package. Keith Lee comes to the ring with both belts, but not with the rumored new NXT Championship belt. He pays tribute to his recently-deceased trainer and thanks the fans. He says that he wouldn’t be where he is without Dominik Dijakovik and calls him to the ring. Dijakovic congratulates him. Lee says he spoke to the NXT GM and got Dijakovic a shot at his titles, both of them, tonight. Dijakovic agrees so it’s on. This was a very main roster’y segment; I wish they’d just announced the match ahead of time on social media.
Damian Priest def. Cameron Grimes
I can’t call this a squash because Grimes got some offense in, though mostly during the commercial break. But it was quite one-sided. The finish here was very strong, culminating in Priest hitting the Reckoning at 6:22 (shown of 9:55). Priest calls out the winner of tonight’s double title match. **¾
Timothy Thatcher trains his camp again, telling his trainees to keep wrestling holds on after the opponent has tapped out. The screaming sound effect is really bootleg. And that’s it. These have become very redundant.
Indi Hartwell def. Shotzi Blackheart
Tom Philips starts leaning into a heel persona on commentary here, and since he’s rather irritating to begin with I don’t hate it. What I do hate is the way Beth Phoenix is forced to sound stupid by arguing with him for the sake of it. Just let Phoenix do what she usually does since she’s getting better at that. This was looking to be a squash, which would have been good because Hartwell didn’t appear to be ready for much else. But Robert Stone and Aliyah came out to interfere, giving Hartwell the opportunity to hit a running boot for the win at 4:06. *½
Tegan Nox wants to join Kane and Molly Holly in the hall of champions. Kane is such a weird idol to have! Also, I’m pretty sure Nox misunderstands that “I wise man once said” is meant to lead to a quote from an actual known person. Elsewhere, Legado del Fantasma celebrates their victory at Great American Bash and the end of Drake Maverick. They’re mad that Breezango insulted Lucha Libre, because it’s not a party, it’s an art. They’re going to tear down the cruiserweight division and then build it back up.
Keith Lee def. Dominik Dijakovic {NXT Championship & NXT North American Championship Match}
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that this was a straight up win for Lee given that Dijakovic had been off TV for quite a while before this. I usually don’t like this matchup as much as most, but they streamlined their usual shtick here and stayed away from the posturing and exaggerated motions in favor of quick action and stiff shots. Lee won clean in 11:54 (shown of 15:37). After the match, Scarlette comes out and dumps the shattered remains of the hourglass that Lee destroyed in the ring. ***½
Dijakovic says that Lee is on a whole new level now, and Karrion Kross wouldn’t stand a chance against him. Kross approaches him and speaks to him in (I assume) Croatian. Dijakovic says, “let’s do it,” and then gets his ass handed to him.
Timothy Thatcher def. Denzel Dejournette
I like that they’re keeping Thatcher paired against guys who are comfortable on the mat. I was having a blast with this, but Thatcher put Dejournette away quickly at 1:51 with a half crab. He keeps the hold on but Oney Lorcan makes the save. Not sad to see this feud carry on. N/A
Robert Stone apologizes to Killian Dain, but he’s interrupted by Aliyah running up to him with a Dexter Lumis drawing. Dain takes offense to the drawing and says that if Stone wants to make the coffee spill up to him he’ll get Dain a match against Lumis. That’s announced for next week, and so is Kross vs. Dijakovic.
Io Shirai def. Tegan Nox {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
This was good, but stayed mostly in second gear for quite a while. They gave these two a ton of TV time, more than is afforded to most NXT TV main events. After the second commercial break things picked up, but this was the rare case of a title match that probably should have been five minutes shorter. Also, if Nox is going to use the chokeslam, she needs to put a lot more of herself into it. She’s too small to hit it as if it’s effortless. Those complaints aside, it was good to see a no-nonsense Women’s Championship match in the main event. It just needed a bit more urgency earlier on. Shirai won in 16:58 (shown of 23:00). After the match, Dakota Kai attacks Shirai. ***½
