WALTER def. Kushida
Alexander Wolfe picked this. This was the main event of the second NXT after going to two hours, though this match aired only on the WWE Network, not on USA. Ignoring Kushida’s stint in EVOLVE, both guys were undefeated going into this. This was pretty incredible. It featured a recovery from a botched dive that was so good that they showed a replay of it. I’ve never seen that before. It set an awesome tone for the rest of the match, as before that Kushida was being very daring and after that he wrestled as if he knew he couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. And of course, after getting as close as anyone to tapping the big man, Kushida tries for the Hoverboard one too many times and falls to a lariat at 13:19 (shown). ****
Eddie Dennis says that Gandhi was an idiot because he didn’t realize that belief could be manipulated and Dennis has knowledge. It’s funny that Gandhi has now been so sufficiently cancelled for racism that you can say stuff like this without it being too controversial.

Toni Storm def. Meiko Satomura {Semifinal Match}
Xia Brookside picked this one, from the second Mae Young Classic tournament. They backed into a great tournament-long story in which Storm has had to fight her way through all the Japanese imports to get to through the tournament (spoiler alert for the next match). She also had to beat Jinny and Mia Yim but those matches don’t fit the narrative. Anyway, the crowd didn’t buy into the really good mat wrestling in the first half of the match. Their loss. But it didn’t stop them from losing their goddamn minds for the insanely hot second half of the match; Satomura got caught with a Storm Zero, then lost her cool and went all out with striking offense, only to get caught again with another Storm Zero. That gave Storm the win at 13:03. I’m so in on Storm right now, and was especially impressed with how she worked this match for the hard camera. ****

Pete Dunne def. Zack Gibson {WWE United Kingdom Championship}
Flash Morgan Webster selected this match. I wondered at the time if they’d rebrand this title the NXT UK Championship, but it took them almost two years to do it. On the one hand, this was a little less epic feeling than their match in England. On the other hand, there was less indy bullshit in this match than there was in the first, and the indy bullshit that was in this was more entertaining. Back on that first hand, Gibson just looked like an idiot for that finish, focusing on Dunne’s mouth-guard and getting pinned for it at 13:34. But back on the second hand, the rest of the final third of the match, including Gibson’s submission attempt and Dunne escaping by biting the bottom rope, was brilliant. All in all this was just a hair better than their first match. ****
Next week is NXT UK’s Greatest Hits. So it’s just going to be random matches then.
