July 8, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
Tonight’s episode is presented with limited commercial interruption by Mountain Dew and Papa Johns because wrestling fans are gross. I’m a Dominos guy.
Candice LeRae def. Mia Yim {Street Fight}
These two just can’t get out of the opening match. The commentators call this the second women’s Street Fight in the brand’s history, so I guess Dakota Kai vs. Tegan Nox was the first. That doesn’t feel right, but I’m not going to check. This style of match did a lot to hide Yim’s shortcomings, as it’s hard to botch hitting someone with a trash can lid. That said, this style of match doesn’t do a lot for me, as weapon shots that don’t lead to anything tend to vanish from my short-term memory quickly and leave me wondering how this match went over fifteen minutes. Plus there was a whole lot of laying around and unconvincingly waiting for the opponent to get in position for their spot. LeRae won with a swinging neckbreaker off of a table on the top rope onto a pile of chairs at 13:28 (shown of 15:51). If LeRae doesn’t somehow figure into the title picture now I’m not sure why you’d put her over Yim in this apparent blow-off match. **¾
Bronson Reed vs. Tony Nese
I was expecting Damian Priest vs. Cameron Grimes here, but I’m never mad about a Reed match. Nese roughed up Leon Ruff in a dark match earlier in the night until Reed came to his rescue, so that’s how we got this. Because you’ll remember that Reed was kind to Ruff after he squashed him a few weeks ago. Put the Nese vs. Ruff match on YouTube you cowards! There wasn’t much to this one. Nese got some token offense but Reed basically steamrolled him here. He hit the Superfly Splash for the win at 5:18. **¼
Shotzi Blackheart is working on her tank when Robert Stone asks her to join his brand. She shoots him down. He has a tantrum and accidentally throws coffee at Killian Dain. That doesn’t go well for him. Blackheart runs over his foot with the tank for fun.
Johnny Gargano def. Isaiah Scott
This had a bit of the magic that made the Gargano vs. Adam Cole matches so good, but it didn’t come close to that level overall because of the lack of a crowd. Gargano won with the Final Beat DDT at (10:34 shown of 14:08). The finish was a bit anemic, as after hitting a reverse hurricanrana on the floor Gargano couldn’t keep the heat in the match going through his final strike. I think there’s more to mine between these two. ***¼
Nox is fed up with people feeling sorry for her because of her injuries. Io Shirai respects her talent, but doesn’t respect that Nox needs allies. She is constantly betrayed because of it. All that Shirai needs is the title. Nox points out that Shirai needed Asuka to help her beat Sasha Banks. Good, simple build here. They’ll fight for the title next week. There’s been some great week-to-week progression of big matches lately.
Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza def. Fandango, Tyler Breeze & Drake Maverick
Breezango are luchadores (the Conquistadors?) this week. The only problem with this cute entrance gimmick is that they don’t have entrance music for people to get used to. I don’t want to start rumors and I’m not saying this is the case, but it seems like Fandango got flimsily attached to this program; it makes me wonder if Jake Atlas & Kushida might have gotten some bad test results lately. Anyway, this was great. The action was always interesting and they did a great job of teasing Maverick getting his hands on Escobar before it finally happened ten minutes into the match. Sadly for him, Escobar hit him with the Phantom Driver moments later at 10:40. The finish came out of nowhere, but the match was a blast otherwise. ***½
The Garganos are stoked about their wins tonight. Still, Gargano is mad that Finn Balor got in the way of his path to the NXT Championship. LeRae doesn’t want them to forget about that. Next up, just as I was thinking that NXT forgot that they had tag titles, we get another Imperium video package. No work on when they’re next wrestling though. Then, Drew McIntyre predicts that Cole is winning the main event tonight.
Mercedes Martinez def. Santana Garrett
Martinez’s new entrance is stellar. She’s like an Aeon Flux villain. As much as I love Garrett, I think I wouldn’t have even given her the small amount of offense she got here. Martinez got the win at 2:39 with the Fisherman Buster, so it was squishy as hell either way. N/A
That Grimes vs. Priest match is happening next week. Next, Mick Foley says that Lee will win if the match is short, but if it goes long the advantage goes to Cole. Shawn Michaels goes with his son Cole. Well yeah, family first.
Keith Lee def. Adam Cole {NXT Championship vs. NXT North American Championship Match}
Remember when WCW commentators on Nitro spoiled a pre-taped title change on Raw, causing 300,000 viewers to change the channel to see Mankind win the belt? Well the AEW braintrust on their YouTube show advertised NXT’s pre-taped title change spoiler for this show, and I just can’t understand why they’d give the free press to NXT when they’re own competing title match had to be delayed a week. Maybe it won’t hurt them, but why risk it for the sake of an unfunny joke? Whatever, this match ruled. Cole is incredible. I love the way he’d scream while pinning Lee after hitting his finishers, as if doing so would add extra leverage. You never see stuff like that and it actually adds a lot. I also loved that Cole was on defense for basically the entire match, but once he started getting the advantage he knew that he had to just go for finisher after finisher in that moment because he wouldn’t get another chance to win. But that wound up costing him, because in skipping a Last Shot pin in favor of a second Panama Sunrise attempt he got hit with the Spirit Bomb. One Supernova later and Lee became a double champion at 19:55. Oh, and Lee getting the win immediately after turning the tide works well too because it meant that the Undisputed Era didn’t have a chance to interfere. Great match. Karrion Kross and Scarlette are briefly shown watching Lee celebrate. ****
