NXT Great American Bash, Night 1

July 1, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida

Tegan Nox def. Mia Yim, Candice Lerae, and Dakota Kai {Number One Contender Elimination Match}
NXT General Manager William Regal has barred Raquel Gonzalez from ringside. LeRae hit a bunch of dives onto everyone early, getting her stuff in before being eliminated by Yim and Protect Ya Neck at 4:04. Things went back and forth between really fast action and rather sloppy work for a while, culminating in Kai catching Yim with an O’Connor Roll at 10:03. Ending with Kai vs. Nox was the right call, as we’ve seen plenty of Yim and Lerae lately and these two have good chemistry. After a very hard-fought final stretch that lasted a good ten minutes, Kai hit the Molly-Go-Round and Shining Wizard for the win at 19:05 (shown of 20:19, including commercial inset). ***½

Damian Priest doesn’t understand why Cameron Grimes slashed his tires and attacked him outside to win a match, but won’t own it. He challenges Grimes to another match.

Timothy Thatcher def. Oney Lorcan
Lorcan demanded this match on Twitter a couple days ago. Not sure why he’s suddenly more interested in fighting Thatcher than going for the tag titles. The crowd sings his theme music during the match, something I hope the regular fans do when crowds are allowed in again in a few years. It took me this long into the broadcast to realize that Tom Philipps is on commentary with Mauro Ranallo and Beth Phoenix tonight. It took me less time to realize that this match rules. These two, to the surprise of no one, complement each other perfectly. How great would it have been to see Lorcan & Danny Burch vs. Thatcher & Matt Riddle? Very great. I liked this even more than the Fight Pit, as it had no bells and whistles and just saw these two beat and stretch each other on the mat. By Robert California Rules these two don’t have to work out again for a month. Thatcher got the win at 11:21 with the Fujiwara Armbar. ***¾

Karrion Kross & Scarlett are going to define NXT’s identity with torment and suffering. They’re coming for Adam Cole and Keith Lee, it seems.

Rhea Ripley def. Aliyah & Robert Stone {Handicap Match}
If Ripley loses, she joins the Robert Stone Brand. Stone goes the route of many classic heel managers before him and wears boxing gear. He has a good sense for wrestling comedy, and created believable openings for Aliyah to gain control. Man-on-woman violence feels so completely out of place here that I wasn’t sure how they’d handle this, but Stone never successfully struck Ripley; at worst he held her (once in a submission hold) for Aliyah to strike, though he mostly just whiffed when going on the attack. I didn’t need this to be this long, but it was fun to watch Ripley use her opponents as weapons against each other and generally look very strong. She put them both in the Prism Trap for the win at 8:01 (shown of 9:53). **¼

Dexter Lumis def. Roderick Strong {Strap Match}
The hype video for this match was better than this match has any chance of being. How is Lumis a babyface? No amount of overselling from Strong is going to make Lumis interesting. The guy is just a log out there. I’d wondered why they had cars next to the ramp, but it becomes clear they’re there to play off of the trunk theme of this feud. The match is unsurprisingly super tame. It picked up a little down the stretch thanks to Strong finally taking over and dusting off the Sick Kick, a move I coined the name for. But this was a lot of Lumis to take. Bobby Fish tried to interfere but Lumis was undeterred and put the Silence on Strong with some strap assistance for the win at 16:02. **½

We get a Prime Target for next week’s Winner Take All match. Keith Lee’s gotta be winning the title, right? Considering the limited commercials (that you have to assume will continue next week), this special, and Lee’s momentum it’d be a mistake if Adam Cole won. Lee respects what Cole has accomplished as champion, but he’s been eyeing that title for a long time. Cole respects Lee’s momentum (star-making performance at Survivor Series, squaring up with Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble, winning the North American title), but says none of that happens without Cole leading the charge for NXT. Good video here. I’m very excited for next week’s match, much moreso than I was for any of Cole’s other title defenses this year, including Takeover.

Finn Balor gets a hype video, though it’s not clear why. LeRae and Johnny Gargano say that she lost because everyone ganged up on her. THen she runs off to brawl with Yim. Isaiah Scott tries to break it up and gets into it with Gargano. So Swerve vs. Gargano next week seems likely.

Legado del Fantasma comes to the ring for a chat. He laments the fall of the lucha libre culture. They used to be movie stars and role models, but now they’re a sideshow. But lucha libre is more than guys in masks doing flips. So now they’re going to build their legacy and redefine lucha libre. Drake Maverick interrupts in a neck brace. But he can’t get past Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde to get to Santos Escobar. Breezango runs out to make the save. They challenge for a six-man tag. So much for Jake Atlas.

Grimes isn’t worried about Priest. Rather, he calls out the winner of next week’s main event. Mercedez Martinez is still on her way, in case you forgot. Actually, she’s gonna be in action next week. Also next week we’ll see Yim vs. LeRae in a singles match.

Io Shirai def. Sasha Banks
Bayley and a corgi accompany Banks to the ring. I didn’t expect Bayley to do shitheel things like honking a car horn to distract Shirai, but I didn’t hate it. This got shaky at points, and I’m not sure why they showed things like repeated near-botches when presumably this was taped earlier in the day and the moment could have easily been edited to look seamless. The rest of the time this was predictably great. Asuka coming out to mist Banks as a response to Bayley’s interference was also fun. Shirai hit the Shotei and the moonsault for the win at 14:03. Asuka and Shirai celebrate as the show goes off the air. ***¾

Okay, that was great. Let’s do it again next week.
