June 24, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
Cameron Grimes def. Damian Priest
Someone attacked Damian Priest an hour before the show and his back is hurt. Cameron Grimes came to the ring to win by forfeit, but Grimes decided to wrestle injured. Priest got in one cool counter to the leaping forearm, hitting a chokeslam. But from there his back gave out and Grimes hit the Cave In on the floor and again in the ring for the win at 3:15. Cool little match. **¾
Robert Stone thinks Rhea Ripley is trying to motivate him to get himself together. He’s signed Aliyah to his brand officially, and he invites Rhea to join again. Ripley throws him in the trash again. Aliyah rolls up and slaps her. Then we check in at the Thatch as Thatch Can school again. Nothing notable happens really.
Santos Escobar def. Jake Atlas
This was underwhelming given the participants involved. It felt like they cut out a giant chunk of the match for the break, which is such a weird move when everything is pre-taped and we can pretty much see the best bits. The finish also came out of nowhere, as Atlas was firmly in control but suddenly just fell victim to the Phantom Driver at 7:16. Solid, but should have been much better. **½
Undisputed Therapy continues, and just when Roderick Strong is feeling confident again, Kyle O’Reilly reveals that he’s the therapist. Aversion therapy works and Strong gets in the trunk this time. Then, the boys tell Strong he has a match with Dexter Lumis tonight. Strong is nervous, but ready. Later, Malcolm Bivens says that Indus Sher is coming for Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch after their attack last week.
Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro
Gonzalez is getting really good at big girl stuff. She didn’t show up on screen on The Last Ride in that bit where Undertaker coached the NXT big folks, but maybe she got the coaching nonetheless. Gonzalez cleaned house and hit Catanzaro with a one-armed powerbomb, leaving the little one open to Kai’s submission at 4:12. I’m really glad this feud was so one-sided. Kai calls out Io Shirai after the match. **¼
I was just served up seven ads for Peacock streaming service in a row. I’m not exaggerating. Seven ads, all for Peacock. The last time something like this happened, it was Mike Bloomberg campaign ads. Now I have to refrain from getting it out of principle.
Karrion Kross def. Bronson Reed
This almost-squash would have gotten very over with a real crowd, but because of Florida’s massive Coronavirus catastrophe we’re probably months away from that happening at least. Kross no-sold at all the right times, making Reed look like he had a fleeting chance before destroying him and putting on the Kross Jacket at 2:22. **
Mercedes Martinez is still on her way. For like the third time.
Rhea Ripley def. Aliyah
This was the squishiest of squashes. Robert Stone interfered by throwing his shoe, but Ripley chased him around and ripped off his jacket. She easily blocked a distraction roll-up and hit the Riptide for the win at 3:08. *½
Dexter Lumis def. Roderick Strong
Lumis won by count out at 1:39 because Strong was too afraid to lock up with him and ran away. Bobby Fish gets stuck in Lumis’s submission after the match, but escapes and runs off too. Blah. N/A
William Regal books Stone & Aliyah in a handicap match against Ripley for next week. Stone doesn’t want to wrestle but he’ll do it if Ripley joins the Robert Stone Brand if she loses. Regal isn’t sure, but Ripley is good with it. Also next week, Mia Yim, Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox, and Dakota Kai will fight for the right to get a shot at Io Shirai’s title and Strong and Lumis will fight again in a Strap Match.
Keith Lee def. Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano {NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match}
This was fun, but I suspect (with some evidence) not as good as it would have been had it been a singles match between Lee and either opponent. The match suffered from a lack of fans, as a lot of the very cool looking moves seemed to underwhelm the Performance Center onlookers. The finish was great though, as Lee allowed Gargano to get hit with the Coup de Gras and then hit Balor with the Supernova for the win at 12:33. I do wish Gargano had been pinned, as I’d like to see Lee vs. Balor in a singles match after Lee wins the NXT Championship. ***½
The matches got less excellent right up until the good main event, but they also got shorter and shorter more or less. I don’t have an excuse for Lumis, though. But I bring that up to say that the show is still moving along at an enjoyable clip, and I’m curious if the next two weeks of Fyter Fest counter programming will pick things up.
