NXT UK Most Brilliant is now pulling its marquee matches from the United States. Still, it was for the WWE United Kingdom Championship, so it works.
Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne are both interviewed about how they were feeling in the build up to the match. They talk about coming up together and how well they knew each other. They showed photos and footage of some of their time together in the UK indie scene.
Ryan Satin from WWE Backstage and from being irritating on Twitter is interviewed and immediately says he wasn’t familiar with either guy when they debuted in WWE. Good thing he’s being interviewed here! He said Bate stood out to him based on the stuff that WWE put out on everyone. What a coincidence! Why do we care what this guy has to say about any of this?
Thankfully, they come back from the break with an interview with Wolfgang, Trent Steven, and Mark Andrews, the other three members of the “original UK 5.” Seven was honored to be able to be there in Chicago to support his boys. Wolfgang talks about all the talent that was in the UK at the time, drawing WWE’s attention. That leads to a clip of WALTER looking way chubbier than he is now. Andrews says that the Chicago match changed the game.
Next up are interviews with Shawn Michaels (looking a lot like Triple H with his quarantine beard), Johnny Moss (NXT UK’s head coach), and William Regal. They talk about the history of British wrestling and how the inaugural UK title tournament paid tribute to it. Dunne looked, no joke, ten years younger only three years ago. Regal didn’t know if the crowd would get behind the match, and Moss got goosebumps when they started chanting “UK, UK, UK!”

Pete Dunne def. Tyler Bate {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
From NXT Takeover: Chicago. They did talking heads during this match, as usual, the most interesting of which was Bate talking about what doing the airplane spin does to his body. “Why does Nigel McGuinness say that Bate has been fighting for over a decade when he debuted 2 years before this? Dunne, however, has been wrestling since he was 12.” That’s something I wrote when I watched this match two years ago, not knowing that he’d been training for years. This match actually had a lot more fire than their first in the UK, which might have been because they were performing in front of many thousands more fans who got behind them. It also had a better finish, which saw Dunne win the title with the Bitter End at 15:17. It’s also the first WWE UK match that made me believe that these guys could carry their own brand. Before this it was feeling a lot like indie guys doing indie stuff but a little more restrained on WWE TV. I guess that more or less reinforces what the UK roster was saying about the importance of the match. It won the NXT match of the year award in 2017. ****¼
Next week the cycle is broken and we get another set of Superstar picks. I guess they ran out of good Hidden Gems. I still hope we get to see the Adam Cole vs. Dave Mastiff NXT Championship match at some point.
