NXT UK 99

A month ago, Imperium got the spotlight. This week, it’s Gallus Boys on Top.

January 9, 2019 – Liverpool, Merseyside

Mark Coffey, Joe Coffey & Wolfgang def. Pete Dunne, Trent Seven & Tyler Bate
Gallus beat British Strong Style in 25:31 when Joe Coffey hit Bate with a lariat. Gallus brought the goods as a well-oiled, cheating heel team. Seven was, once again, the ultimate underdog. And that left Dunne and Bate to be the powerhouses we all love them to be. This was a half-step below 2018’s British Strong Style matches, but then Gallus isn’t exactly at the same level as the Undisputed Era when it comes to putting on epic tag matches. Still, they gave this plenty of time, making it feel like a compelling final argument to watch Takeover. ****

They skipped Takeover: Blackpool entirely, probably because the culmination of the Dunne/Coffey feud ended in Coffey falling off the top rope twice and then getting his head kicked off by WALTER. They skip ahead to the next Takeover.

August 31, 2019 – Cardiff, Wales

Joe Coffey def. Dave Mastiff {Last Man Standing Match}
This was about on the level of their really fun, if short, TV match. The action in that match was concise and intense, whereas this was more drawn out, more exaggerated, had more plunder, and had an actual finish. It started with the top turnbuckle flying off the ring after an Irish whip into the corner, followed by a rather inspired “botched” spot by the equilibrium-impaired Coffey. The finish was both guys fall off of a platform through a table, and then Coffey serving Mastiff his first one-on-one loss since NXT UK began by kicking the crate he was using to prop himself up out from under the big man at 16:03. Actually, Coffey pretty much has Mastiff’s number as he defeated him in the very 2018 UK Championship Tourney too. ***½

That night, Kay Lee Ray won the NXT UK Women’s Championship and a couple months later, Mark Coffey & Wolfgang won the NXT UK Tag Team Championships. At WrestleMania, Nikki Cross (with Alexa Bliss) won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships and Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship. So five Scottish wrestlers were champions in WWE at the same time in a kind of bizarrely delightful turn of events. They did a video conference roundtable with the five of them, and the Gallus portion of it is shown here.

They wrap things up with Gallus’s biggest title defense to date.

January 12, 2020 – Blackpool, Lancashire

Mark Coffey & Wolfgang def. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner, Zack Gibson & James Drake, and Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews {NXT UK Tag Team Championship Ladder Match}
This is joined in progress about ten minutes into the match. Gibson & Drake made me so happy early on here, when they opted to grab chairs instead of a ladder so they could beat everyone up before trying to win the match. That’s the kind of thing that’s missing in most ladder matches. From there it was spot-spot-spot-spot-spot nonstop, which is less novel but at least the spots were dope. They really didn’t take any time to breath here, so you never had time to do anything but be wowed by what you were seeing. It got a little silly near the end and it went a few minutes longer than it needed to, putting it on the level of the four team ladder match from Takeover: XXV. You do have to appreciate that when Flash Mandrews’ stereo table spot went wrong, they adjusted and hit a double drive onto Wolfgang for a wild visual. The finish was pretty cool, as Wolfgang speared Aichner through a table and Coffey knocked Barthel out of the ring onto everyone else before grabbing the belts at 24:59. ***¾

Gallus meets up under a bridge, but don’t shake hands because of COVID. Wolfgang can’t wait to defend his tag titles again. Mark’s hair is pretty long. Joe is ready to get up from his recent losses and get back to winning.

As predicted, next week is another Superstar Picks week, per the pattern. It’s also the 100th episode of NXT UK which is kind of a drag.
