Alright, Hidden Gems are back!
March 7, 2020 – Coventry, West Midlands
Finn Balor def. Kenny Williams
It’s interesting that they mentioned that Balor was focused on WALTER when this match happened, since that’s on hiatus until god knows when. Balor name-checks WALTER a few minutes into the match, so I guess that’s why. Williams needs to work on his rebound lariat; it does not look good. The match felt pretty flat despite an invested crowd. Balor won this long squash in 8:10 with the 1916 as he called out WALTER again. **¼
October 5, 2019 – Brentwood, Essex
Rhea Ripley def. Nina Samuels
Between this and the last Hidden Gems episode they’re pretty clearly hard up for women’s dark matches. This was another squash. Samuels had a couple very brief moments of control, but the crowd was dead for them because she’s not the most exciting in the ring and there was no question she’d lose. Ripley won in 4:32 with the Riptide. *½
June 16, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire
Killian Dain def. Travis Banks
This was before Banks’s official return post sAnitY, so he’s wearing normal trunks. Finally we get a competitive match, but thanks to a characteristically silent Download Festival crowd and a plodding Dain void of his anarchist personality, this was a bit of a slog to get through. Dain won in 8:26 with the Vader Bomb. **
July 19, 2019 – Plymouth, Devon
Matt Riddle, Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Joseph Conners, James Drake & Zack Gibson
Gibson cut a very house-showy promo before the match. The Street Profits and the Grizzled Young Veterans were champs of their respective brands at the time. Your enjoyment of this match will correlate directly with how much you like light, inessential, non-televised matches. Riddle looked bored and I was too. Ford was in a chinlock for what felt like eternity. That bit works when the heels constantly cheat to keep him from his corner, but here they just took turns keeping him on the mat with no interesting flourishes. Riddle beat Conners with the Bro Derek at 13:38. **¼
I appreciate that he got previously unaired matches here, even if none of them were great. Next week will be all about Gallus. At this point the pattern appears to be Superstar Picks → Most Brilliant (an episode focused on the build to a Takeover match) → Hidden Gems → Spotlight on a Faction. I guess that will do for now… though with Ireland and the UK beginning to reopen, I don’t expect more than two more cycles of this.
