It’s take two for NXT UK Most Brilliant. This time we take a rather striking step down from Tyler Bate vs. WALTER to do a deep dive on Kay Lee Ray vs. Piper Niven vs. Toni Storm.
Things start with a clip of Storm beating Rhea Ripley for the NXT UK Women’s Championship. Storm then feuds with Jinny.
April 10, 2019 – Coventry, West Midlands
Toni Storm def. Jinny {NXT UK Women’s Championship Match}
They incorrectly list the airdate of this as the 12th of April. Not sure how something like that happens. I really liked everything in this match from the moment that Jinny hit her finisher and failed to get the win. From there, Jinny really sold her frustration and then allowed that to keep her from focusing. Storm’s comeback was really interesting, and the reversal of a headscissor takedown to a powerbomb transitioned into the Storm Zero was just dope. That gave Storm the win at 10:33. Most of the match leading up to that point was fine, if more or less unspectacular. This was a solid main event for what was essentially the leftovers of a TV taping series. ***
Next, we see the end of the Download Festival battle royal to determine Storm’s Takeover: Cardiff challenger. KLR won that match. Meanwhile, Rhea Ripley and Piper Niven had been having a feud over who was the most dominant woman on the brand.
July 3, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire
Piper Niven def. Rhea Ripley
Ripley hijacks the show to make sure this match starts things off, frustrated about this feud going on for three months without a match between them. I had some issues with the pacing here, as they started going at each other ferociously, then slowed things way down for far too long, before bringing back the fire for the finish. After complaining a bit about Ripley selling too much in past matches, I feel weird saying that it was Niven who gave up too much here. All that said, when these two were really after each other this was a fun hang, but it wasn’t as major as I was expecting it to be and I’m kind of surprised they put Niven over clean and seemingly ended the feud here. Niven got the win at 8:09 with the Michinoku Driver. ***
At Takeover: Cardiff, KLR beat Storm for the title. Niven narrates a montage about the friendships that she shared with Storm and KLR. But Niven started to notice that KLR and Storm had grown apart, and both became different in their personalities. That takes us to the hype video for the Takeover: Blackpool II triple threat match.
January 12, 2020 – Blackpool, Lancashire
Kay Lee Ray def. Piper Niven and Toni Storm {NXT UK Women’s Championship Triple Threat Match}
This was the first time this title was defended since KLR won it in August, which is absurd. WALTER also hadn’t defended his title since August. We got the same talking head treatment here as we did in the Bate vs. WALTER retrospective a few weeks back, and they add some nice context to the match. This was an improvement over the women’s match in Cardiff. Whereas there the story was stronger than the action, here they were able to integrate the story (of Storm’s wavering allegiance to her friendship with Niven and of KLR’s manipulation of both opponents) with some really nice action that rarely relied on shortcuts. It is annoying though that every triple threat match in NXT ends in the exact same way. Here, Storm hit a Frog Splash on Niven, and then KLR snuck in and hit a thrust kick on Storm before pinning Niven at 15:58. Give me a different finish! ***¼
Next week, more Hidden Gems are released. Thank god. Look, I thought this episode was really well put together. I don’t think the match it was building to is so amazing, but they did a good job of making it feel important. That said, I love stuff I haven’t seen before.
