April 29, 2020 – Orlando, Florida
Thank god Mauro Ranallo & Beth Phoenix are back. Ranallo should be in his element here, needing to fill a ton of dead silence.
Isaiah Scott def. El Hijo del Fantasma {Group B Round RobinTournament Match}
I always wondered what King Cuerno vs. Killshot would look like. Well, that’s not true but it’s a good excuse to plug my ongoing Lucha Underground reviews. Before the break this was feeling like a match done in practice, as Scott seemed hesitant before his aerial maneuvers. It got a touch better after the commercial, but not enough to really hook me. Scott got a roll up for the win at 8:04 (shown of 11:22). That puts both guys at 1-1 in the tournament. **½
Dominik Dijakovic cuts a promo while on a nature walk about Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae being complainers. He wants to fight Gargano next week. Back at ringside, we see that the evil kidnapping luchadors came for Fantasma again and he fought them off again.
Candice LeRae def. Kacy Catanzaro
Candice has new creepy heel music. It’s a little too horror-goth for me, especially with Gargano out there with her as her hype man. This was squishy, with LeRae picking up the win with her new finisher, the Wicked Stepsister (a Super Dragon-style Curb Stomp) at 4:02. She puts Catanzaro in the GargaNo Escape after the match. I dig her adding an ode to her old employer into her repertoire and I liked the way she’d shout about not letting Catanzaro “embarrass [her] in front of [her] husband.” Match was fine, I guess. **
Matt Riddle & Timothy Thatcher are out so that Riddle can rationalize Thatcher being his interim tag team partner with an episode of the Newly-Bros Show. Thatcher was not aware this was happening. Byron Saxton is hosting. Frankly, this show needed more stuff like this. It’s mostly jokes about Riddle being high and Thatcher being in ring gear despite not competing. The canned laughter was a nice touch. And then before it wears out its welcome, Imperium attacks the champs. This was a good use of Saxton, and I don’t think he needs to be on commentary again.
Adam Cole has accepted that he’s got to defend his title against Velveteen Dream next week. The result of that match should be indicative of where WWE stands on the allegations that have been levied against Dream.
Charlotte Flair def. Mia Yim
They kept it nice and basic here, but allowed Yim to get a bit in before Flair put her down with the Figure 8 Leglock at 7:34 (shown of 10:52). Not really the match that all the hype for it portended, though. After the match, Io Shirai comes out to say she’ll be getting her title shot next week. Big show next week. **¾
Karian Cross & Scarlett will apparently make their official NXT debut next week. Later, Catanzaro is being checked out by a medical person when LeRae walks up and tells her and Kayden Carter that this is the new NXT. Later still, we look back at the weird Finn Balor erasure from last week’s episode. Balor will call out his attacker next week.
Dexter Lumis def. Shane Throne
Uch why? Thorne has so much more upside than Lumis and they just make him job like crazy almost 10,000 miles from home. Lumis won with the Anaconda Vice in 3:30. I hate this. N/A
Drake Maverick def. Tony Nese {Group A Round Robin Tournament Match}
Last week, Jake Atlas tried to get Maverick motivated for the rest of his tournament run. The story was more interesting than the match was athletic here. Nese bullied Maverick through the match, but missed a knee down the stretch and got caught with a pair of moves off of the top rope and picked up the win. He hit an avalanche bulldog at 6:42 shown of 10:03 to put Nese away. Maverick is now 1-1 and Nese is out of contention at 0-2. **¾
Keith Lee def. Damian Priest {NXT North American Championship Match}
Lee came into this with a bruised larynx and a scratchy voice. These guys fought hard and kept my attention much more than the other matches on this show did. The finish was corny, but kind of funny and ultimately cute; Priest used the title belt to get the referee’s attention, then brought in the night stick. Lee blocked the shot, gave an action movie line, handed the night stick to the ref and finished Lee at 11:01 (shown of 14:33). Good way to end the show. ***¼
The lack of crowds was never fun, but now it’s really wearing on me. Next week is a really big show, and I’m not looking forward to it at all because the matches tend to fall so flat. I wish they’d embrace more segments like the Riddle bit and less in-ring stuff while the arena is silent.
