April 15 ,2020 – Orlando, Florida
Finn Balor def. Fabian Aichner
This was pretty good as both guys are total pros, though the interference by Marcel Barthel behind the referee’s back was hard to buy when it’s completely silent in the room and there’s no way the referee didn’t hear the cheating going down. Balor hit 1916 for the win at 8:32 (shown of 11:47). ***
Charlotte Flair brags about winning the NXT Women’s Championship, all the other titles she’s won, having beaten Trish Stratus, the other Four Horsewomen, and also fighting and not getting tapped or pinned by Ronda Rousey. She says she’s giving Mia Yim the first crack at her, but it must be non-title because Io Shirai is the number one contender. The commentators don’t mention it.
Xia Li def. Aliyah
Turns out it was Aliyah who took out Li backstage a couple weeks ago, not Shirai. Aliyah performed surprisingly well in front of no fans. Actually, that might make sense as she probably gets most of her ring time at the Performance Center in front of the same size crowd. Li pretty much dominated her and won with a spin kick to the back at 3:12. *¾
Matt Riddle is on the phone with Pete Dunne, who is just now telling him who his tag team partner is tonight. Riddle is defending the titles against the Undisputed Era with a partner of Dunne’s choosing, since Dunne is stuck in the UK. Riddle is surprised to hear who the surprise is.
Akira Tozawa def. Isaiah Scott {Group B Round Robin Tournament Match}
NXT’s first round robin tournament begins here, to crown an interim Cruiserweight Champion that will presumably fight Jordan Devlin when Devlin can travel out of Ireland again. I’m very curious to see how they pull this off. These guys fought a little loose, and a few moments suffered as a result. Things tightened up after the commercial. I was pretty surprised to see Tozawa get the win, as he’s been mired in obscurity on Fridays while Scott has strung together a few wins on Wednesdays. Tozawa hit the diving senton for the win at 8:05 (shown of 11:35). **¾
We get introduced to El Hijo del Fantasma, who will be in the title tournament. I’m very surprised he’s using that name and somewhat disappointed that he’s in the tournament and not the parking lot kidnapper. Maybe he’ll be both.
Tegan Nox def. Raquel Gonzalez
This wasn’t for me. Gonzalez mostly dominated using her size and a bit of cheating from Dakota Kai on the floor. Shotzi Blackheart ran out to neutralize Kai, and Nox rolled up Gonzalez for the win at 3:17. *
Keith Lee talks about his wrestling backstory. He was into the Freebirds and Randy Savage when he was younger. He defied his parents to start his wrestling and was temporarily kicked out of his family house. He said his style was looked down upon for a while, but then he made it to NXT after 13 years and his rivalry with Dominik Dijakovic opened doors for him. Survivor Series and Royal Rumble made him a breakout star. Mick Foley, who was at Lee’s first wrestling even, congratulated him on his career. This was neat, and broke up the monotony of this show a bit.
Dexter Lumis def. Tehuti Miles
Speaking of monotony, here’s Lumis. Miles is fresh off jobbing on Raw. I’ve been meaning to get a yellow flannel, and Miles’ shirt reminds me I need to pull the trigger on that. This was a boring squash, surprising no one. He puts on the Anaconda Vice for the win at 1:45. They must realize that this guy doesn’t fit in NXT, or in wrestling probably. N/A
Velveteen Dream had been waiting all night to have a face-to-face with Adam Cole. But then Cole called in from his backyard to say he wasn’t coming in. Is he under quarantine? Is he at a higher risk? Anyway, he says that Dream doesn’t deserve a title shot and neither does anyone else. But tonight, Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish will take back the tag titles. This seems like a weird stall. Dream comes out to run down Cole on the mic. He’s approached by Balor, so now I’m convinced they’re stalling on Cole for a COVID-19 related reason (either choosing not to wrestle, being immunocompromised, or having been sick at some point recently perhaps). Balor doesn’t like Dream. They agree to fight next week.
Stokely Hathaway says that Indus Sher is going to win the tag titles from whoever wins the main event tonight. Next week, the remaining six guys in the tournament will have their first matches. Tom Philips alludes to the fact that Drake Maverick was fired earlier in the day but is still in the tournament anyway. Also next week, Nox & Blackheart will fight Kai & Gonzalez.
Matt Riddle & Timothy Thatcher def. Bobby Fish & Roderick Strong {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Dunne announced Thatcher as his replacement on the big screen. This is the weirdest way to debut someone new. The Full Sail fans definitely would have known who Thatcher was and gone nuts for him, but I guess if they were there then Dunne would have been too so this wouldn’t have been how we were introduced to him anyway. This was going along just fine, as these guys are all excellent and can work a good match without a crowd. But then Lumis was seen staring from the shadows and that’s just garbage. I don’t want him interacting with any of these guys. Anyway, Thatcher got to look great, everyone worked hard, and Lumis didn’t actually interfere in the match at all. Thatcher caught Strong with a Fujiwara Armbar (which must be fair game now that Deonna Purrazzo is fired) and got the win at 15:19 (shown of 22:09). Is there some clarification now as to Thatcher’s status as a tag team champ or interim champ? ***½
Tommaso Ciampa cuts a quick promo backstage saying that he’s a man of his word and he won’t retaliate against Johnny Gargano or Candice LeRae. Then he’s attacked by a Killer Kross. Scarlett Bordeaux’s boots are also seen.
