NXT UK 86

March 5, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire

Alexander Wolfe def. Travis Banks
Wolfe got a pop until the crowd realized it was him, as he has the same entrance as WALTER. That bums me out a number of levels, chief of which is that Wolfe has been killing it since his NXT UK debut and he deserves a bigger response. This had a few spurts of fun flow, but the dead crowd kept them from linking together. On the bright side, Banks didn’t do some of the things he often does that annoy me. Wolfe was his usual great self. I still can’t believe this is the same guy from SAnitY. I liked the finish quite a bit too, as Wolfe got a near-fall with a big DDT, then just battered Banks with short-arm clotheslines until he was vulnerable to fall to the Ligerbomb (which he’d failed to hit a couple times earlier) at 9:00. ***

Eddie Dennis compares his former career as a school principal with his current one as a wrestler. He has an advantage because beyond hurting a body part, he can manipulate a mind. They’re just not going to give up on this guy. Next, we get a look at the UK tag division. Even with the Grizzled Young Veterans and Mustache Mountain gone there are still heaps of teams. Weirdly, we don’t get any kind of an announcement about any kind of direction for the division.

Ridge Holland def. Saxon Huxley
Holland’s match against Huxley’s tag partner Tyson T-Bone was fun, so this could be too? I suppose it was but Holland won in 1:18 with the Northern Grit so there wasn’t much of a chance for it to be fun, not fun, or anything in between. Holland’s chill gimmick doesn’t match his mini-Brock Lesnar style. N/A

Jordan Devlin has a message for NXT UK General Manager Johnny Saint. Sid Scala has been calling him constantly, and Devlin has decided to return to NXT UK next week with his NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

Aoife Valkyrie def. Isla Dawn
Dawn’s entrance takes way too long given the crowd doesn’t care about her, and Valkyrie’s is too cheesy. This match didn’t come together as anything much, but it did give both ladies a chance to try out some new stuff (at least new to this show) that could probably work in a match that anyone cared about. Valkyrie hit the diving ax kick for the win at 4:34. *¾

Ligero points out that when heels don’t have a program, they call out Ligero. He’s going to beat up Noam Dar, the latest guy who has picked on him. He hasn’t won any of these feuds so I’m not sure why this one would be any different. Also, when did Dar say anything about Ligero? It wasn’t on NXT UK TV.

WALTER def. Dave Mastiff {NXT UK Championship Match}
There was a nice video hyping this match at the top of the show. I think the crowd might just be tired, because they don’t really react to WALTER either. Finn Balor gets a passing mention on commentary, but while it’s nice that they put that in in post, Balor’s message was that WALTER would be seeing him sooner than he thought and they couldn’t deliver on that given that this episode was taped six weeks ago. Anyway, the match was a blast. WALTER kept trying to put Mastiff away quickly, and it kept blowing up in his face. He did well with chops and kicks, but when he went for his signature moves Mastiff was able to take control. Mastiff kept his cool until WALTER kicked out of Into the Void. Then, Mastiff took a risk and got knocked off the top. WALTER then adjusted, strung together a few strikes, and then hit a powerbomb for the win at 7:59. I could have used a few more minutes of this at least. This is the exact kind of TV title defense WALTER should be doing at least once per taping cycle. ***½
