NXT UK 82

February 6, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire

Piper Niven def. Dani Luna
Luna got signed after this taping, so hopefully this is pretty good. I’d said in the past that Luna looked good in squashes, and that her powerlifting gimmick had potential. Niven was the right person to have a power battle with now that Jazzy Gabert is gone. This was short, but Luna got to show off a couple feats of strength against her larger opponent. That said, this was pretty rough at times. Niven won in 4:34 with the Michinoku Driver. *¾

Gallus accepts the challenge of Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan. Meanwhile, Jordan Devlin says that his new title proves that he’s the best wrestler under 205 pounds. Of course, the order of these tapings means we won’t see him on this show for some time.

Tyler Bate def. A-Kid
I think Kid needs to lose the Abraham Lincoln beard. He doesn’t need to lose anything else though. Bate only has dope matches and Kid was more than able to keep up with him. Sadly, Bate abruptly put Kid down with the Tyler Driver ‘97 at 5:40. The commentators thankfully address it, saying that when Bate decides a match is over, it’s over. Bate shakes Kid’s hand after the match, and hopefully this leads to a more fleshed out bout down the line. As Kid walks to the back, Joseph Conners comes out to spout his usual grievances. He accuses Bate of ignoring him. It’ll be interesting to see if Bate can get anything out of Conners, as to date I’ve only ever seen one good match from Conners but it was outside of NXT and it was all thanks to Pete Dunne. ***

After last week’s main event, Dave Mastiff went looking for WALTER, but the champ was nowhere to be found.

Ashton Smith & Oliver Carter def. Lewis Howley & Sam Stoker
Pretty Deadly recently got signed too. Lots of that going around lately. This was a way better showing for both teams than the last time any of them were on this show. Pretty Deadly got to show off, while Smith & Carter kept things steady throughout. Carter looks like he’s gotten into better shape, too. He pinned Stoker with a wild backbreaker at 5:44. Pretty Deadly attacks after the match. **¾

Joe Coffey said that Ilja Dragunov’s days are numbered. Dragunov is incredulous at that, and he says he’s ready for Coffey. When did Coffey say that? It was Dragunov who was interviewed last week, not Coffey. The last time Coffey spoke on this show was to Dragunov’s face. This is a production error.

Kay Lee Ray comes out to brag about still being champion. Toni Storm comes out saying that KLR stole the win at Takeover. She says Storm is obsessed and addicted. They’re going to settle it once and for all in an I Quit Match, because Storm needs to quit chasing her. If Storm loses, she never gets another shot while KLR is champ. Cute, I’m in.

Next week we get the Gallus vs. Brit-Am Bruisers match and Aoife Valkrie’s debut.

Trent Seven def. Eddie Dennis {Steel Corners Street Fight}
This was a lot better than their Takeover match. That match wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t much of anything. This was a good brawl that used the street fight to build to the steel corners. There were plenty of gnarly bumps, and the cathartic finish, which saw Seven send Dennis into the bolts a couple times before hitting the Birminghammer was quite nice. Seven put Dennis away at 11:28. Dennis clearly needs the extracurriculars to put on compelling performances, so I say give them to him if you’re going to keep using him. ***½
