Finn Balor def. Trent Seven
The day before, Balor had attacked Seven in the parking lot out of spite for Tyler Bate defending Johnny Gargano backstage at Worlds Collide. This was more of a squash than you like to see when Seven is involved, but it’s Seven so he took it like a champ and made the most of it. Balor won in 6:30 with the 1916. **¾
The Broserweights cut a delicious promo about winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tonight. Matt Riddle is so sweet to Pete Dunne, and Dunne somehow sells it without selling it. You really should check out their interview from earlier in the day on the Bump. It’s the best.
Shotzi Blackheart def. Deonna Purrazzo
Blackheart came out in a toy tank that 1) looked cooler on the ramp than it did at ringside and 2) felt a lot more like an AEW thing than an NXT thing. Purrazzo attacked Blackheart last week after the show, though the word attack is a bit misleading as she mostly just shook her unconvincingly. It was dumb. I guess it happened because Blackheart eliminated her from the battle royal? I can’t remember. This match was a little rough, and very short. Blackheart won with a diving senton at 3:17. *¾
Keith Lee came out to presumably challenge Adam Cole and gather more gold, but Damian Priest comes out and challenges for the North American Championship. I’m digging his slimy promo style, and holding the microphone in the weird way he does is about the biggest heel move ever. Dominic Dijakovic comes out, shows Lee respect, and asks for a title shot too. He and Priest get into it while Lee comically slips away.
Dominic Dijakovic def. Damian Priest
Dijakovic won in 5:10 with Feast Your Eyes. This was a fun big boi battle, which is unsurprising because these are fun big bois. I could have used another five minutes of this. ***
Tommaso Ciampa beat up Roderick Strong and the tag champs to get Adam Cole’s attention. NXT General Manager William Regal came out furious, saying that Cole had pre-signed a title match contract for Takeover: Portland that Ciampa could have just signed without all the fuss. Cole, trying to prove a point, goes to the ring to beat up Ciampa and gets his ass powerbombed through a table. Ciampa had gotten cut open in the scuffle and signed the contract in his own blood. Cool visual there.
Tegan Nox def. Dakota Kai
I’m not sure what the benefit is of having Kai go under so much as a heel. First she beats Yim but gets put through tables after the match, and then she loses here when Nox hits the Shining Wizard at 3:14. Granted it happened because Candice LeRae distracted her, but what’s the harm in keeping Kai strong? Anyway, the match was actually cool in the small amount of time it got, as both women almost got disqualified multiple times for foreign object use but just barely didn’t. It was a neat little theme. **¾
Kayden Carter def. Chelsea Green
Carter got the upset win in 3:09 with a roll up. This match was pretty much nothing. Both looked kind of bad but it’s hard to say too much about their performances because the match was so short. Was this episode really full of mini-matches because USA didn’t want to cut into the premier of Miz & Mrs? I can’t abide by that. This episode has felt really throw-away because of the lack of compelling action. *
Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne def. Zack Gibson & James Drake {Number One Contenders Match}
The Broserweights won in 15:12 (shown) with the elevated enziguiri on Gibson. A lot of this felt like a greatest hits rehashing of the fun bits Riddle & Dunne did in their other tournament matches. Even recycled Broserweights was better than anything else on the show, so this was good. There was a moment near the end where they almost made me believe that the Grizzled Young Veterans could win, but not quite. The finish was quite spirited too. ***¾
