Zack Gibson & James Drake def. Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly {Semifinal Match}
Adam Cole & Roderick Strong were at ringside to keep Imperium from screwing with the tag champs. Fish, bless his heart, did the Great Muta taunt and hit a snap moonsault here and I loved it. I never noticed before that Drake has a septum ring, is that new? After a good but not brain-melting match, Imperium showed up in the balcony and the Grizzled Young Veterans picked up the win with the Ticket to Mayhem at 9:58 (shown of 13:02). The ending was cheap, and frankly made the Undisputed Era look really stupid, but the right team went over if they’re doing the finals at Worlds Collide. ***
Toni Storm nc. Io Shirai
The\se two have great chemistry, and this match succeeded greatly because of it. But then Bianca Belair came out and attacked both ladies at 8:27 (shown of 11:00), spoiling everything. Woof, two shit finishes in a row is not a great way to start a show. Rhea Ripley comes out to fight Belair and gets taken out by Shirai. Storm hits a Heat Seeking Missile on Shirai and ends the segment on top. I hope they leave the Worlds Collide match alone and throw Shirai a bone somewhere down the road. ***
The Undisputed Era is furious, but Cole wants them to focus on Strong retaining his title. Maybe Imperium will pay tonight, but they’ll definitely pay at Worlds Collide. Ilja Dragunov is invincible and he’s ready for Finn Balor. Speaking of Balor…
Finn Balor def. Joaquin Wilde
It’s cheesy but I really like Wilde’s entrance. Balor won in 2:06 with the 1916. This was a total squash, but props to Mauro Ranallo for selling it as Balor being insanely good and not Wilde being an incompetent wrestler. N/A
Shayna Baszler def. Shotzi Blackheart
There are few things I like more in wrestling than feuds that are started because one person eliminated another from a battle royal. I also like that the first few minutes of this match was focused on the two of them throwing each other over the top rope to prove a point. Blackheart was way more competitive here than I expected her to be, so they’re clearly interested in making a go of it with her. Baszler won in 6:21 with the Kirafuda Clutch. Baszler kept the hold on for a while after the match. I liked this little match very much and wouldn’t mind a rematch at all. ***¼
Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai will finally fight each other next week. Angel Garza isn’t feeling any pressure about defending his title against three guys this weekend. I really wish they’d put the NXT logo on his belt. WALTER’s belt is shown to finally be re-branded with the NXT logo in the next segment.
Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne def. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner {Semifinal Match}
WALTER & Alexander Wolfe are out with Imperium, though that tactic didn’t work in the opener, so I’m not sure why it’d work any better here. It did work in at least one moment in giving Imperium the advantage over the Broserweights (and a cool Dunne/WALTER stare-down moment. After a commercial break we get the wonderful Broserweight tandem stuff. They’re just delightful together. Also delightful was the run up to the finish, wherein things escalated more and more until Imperium made the mistake of losing track of who was legal, giving the Broserweights the win at 11:27 (shown of 14:41) with the Bro To Sleep/enziguiri combo. The GYV come out after the match and reveal that the finals are happening next week. I think it’s a big miss that this isn’t happening at Worlds Collide, but I guess it’s an issue of time. ***¾
Keith Lee def. Roderick Strong {NXT North American Championship Match}
Lee’s selling here was top notch. Strong tried to reaggravate the injury he’d done to the leg the week before, a great way to keep it believable that he’d be in control for so much of the match. The match was a lot better than their first against each other a couple months ago. Worlds better, really. The finish legitimately caught me off-guard, as Lee was having a rough time holding off the Undisputed Era, and then popped up to hit the Supernova at 14:28 (shown of 20:30). For momentum’s sake, it was the right move to put the title on Lee here, but I’m very curious to see how they follow up going into Takeover: Portland because it doesn’t seem like there’s much of a storyline coming out of this. Fun fact: 50% of the North American title holders have been black; that’s a pretty wild distinction given WWE’s crappy history of racism. ****
Imperium hits the ring after the match and brawls with the Undisputed Era to close out the show.
