January 8, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
A nice hype video for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic kicks things off. Then, Rhea Ripley comes out for a chat. She talks about winning the title and then Toni Storm comes out to remind her that she’s beaten her twice. Storm says she’ll win the NXT UK title this Sunday, and then challenges Ripley for a title match at Worlds Collide. Ripley accepts. Kay Lee Ray is here and says Storm won’t win the belt on Sunday. None of them name the show they’re talking about so Mauro Ranallo does it for them. Io Shirai and Bianca Belair both come out and challenge for the title. Belair says to Storm, “You don’t even go here,” in the line of the decade so far. Candice LeRae is out so that Ripley can start a brawl and set up a six-woman tag match, blondes vs. non-blondes.
Rhea Ripley, Candice LeRae & Toni Storm def. Kay Lee Ray, Io Shirai & Bianca Belair
The match starts during the commercial, so that’s a tough noogies for folks not watching it live. The last time there was a six-woman tag in 11 months. Ripley hit Belair with the Riptide at 9:15 (shown of 16:17) for the win. This did not click. Shirai and Belair turned on each other at the end of the match and it was timed like doodie. Things were only okay up to that point anyway. I guess points to Ripley for freaking out like the Undertaker at a house show on the apron. **½
Tommaso Ciampa video in which he talks about his title reign and then tells Adam Cole that he’s going to take the NXT Championship back.
Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel def. Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler {Quarterfinal Match}
Both of these teams were in the tournament last year. The Forgotten Sons made it to the finals. Aichner has a protective mask on and Cutler’s long hair is gone. The hair kind of ruins the Forgotten Sons whole style. This was a fun little fast-paced spotfest. This tournament brings out the energy in the Sons. Imperium puts them down in 5:11 with the European Bomb. ***
Matt Riddle admits that he doesn’t know Pete Dunne that well, but he asked him to be his partner in the tournament because they have very similar taunts. Riddle is a charmer. B r o s e r w e i g h t s is a fine name for the team.
Austin Theory def. Joaquin Wilde
Theory’s got a new, cooler entrance. I’m not sure what to make of Wilde’s headgear, except that it’s not as cool as the Mustafa Ali-style light-up gear he used to have. These two had several matches against each other on the indies and they worked well together here. The crowd was really dead for this though. Theory won in 3:00 with a TKO. Okay then, not much time to get things going here. **
After a Damien Priest promo, Nigel McGuinness says that Priest put the ghost of Killian Dain behind him. Is Dain dead?!
Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly def. Mark Coffey & Wolfgang {Quarterfinal Match}
While it’s probably the right move to have Keith Lee’s big win in the main event, it’s a little odd that the NXT vs. NXT UK Tag Champs tournament match is in the middle of the show. The Undisputed Era won the 2018 tournament despite not being in it until the finals, and then went out in the opening round last year. This is Gallus’s first time in the tournament, and they’re the de facto heels (despite being babyfaces in NXT UK). Unfortunately, they wrestled in opposition to what the crowd wanted. The match was pretty solid, but the finish was super lazy, as Adam Cole hit Wolfgang behind the referee’s back and then he fell to Total Elimination at 8:53 (shown of 12:24). I’d have preferred that if they were going to do that finish that Imperium come out to help the Undisputed Era, as that would really protect Gallus. I could see why you wouldn’t want Imperium and the Era working together though, as they’ll be fighting each other in the main event of Worlds Collide. ***
Johnny Gargano comes out for a chat. He’s stoked that he cost Finn Balor the NXT Championship. Balor left NXT after putting it on the map and Gargano took it to new heights. Balor comes out and proves that his heel promos are way better than his good guy ones, and says he’ll fight Gargano at Takeover: Portland (five and a half weeks away) if Gargano can keep from getting injured until then.
And holy shit, unlike last week when NXT did the least interesting thing in every segment, this week they do the most interesting thing when they announce that Kushida’s mystery partner in the Dusty Classic is going to be Alex Shelley in a reformation of the New Japan Time Splitters tag team.
Mia Yim def. Kayden Carter
This was little more than a squash. Yim won with Protect Ya Neck at 3:46. Chelsea Green attacks both after the match. She’s got Robert Stone as her manager, and he cuts a little promo. **
They show another Tommaso Ciampa threatening Cole video. Why? Did they forget that they already showed one tonight? This one ends in a very cool way, with Ciampa holding up the name plates for the title belt from when he was champ. Still, weird. Also, next week they’re doing a battle royal to determine Ripley’s challenger for Takeover: Portland. No mention of if the Worlds Collide title match is happening.
Keith Lee def. Dominik Dijakovic, Cameron Grimes, and Damian Priest {Number One Contender Match}
More like a foregone conclusion match, amiright? Lee won after hitting the Spirit Bomb on Grimes at 11:22 (shown of 14:01). This was exactly what you’d expect it to be, a bunch of giants doing things that giants shouldn’t do and the crowd going insane for it. It was a lot of fun, with a nice, consistent pace and energy. Lee was the obvious winne and the right one, and he’ll face Roderick Strong in two weeks for the North American Championship. ***½
