December 4, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida
Killian Dain def. Pete Dunne
Dunne is replacing an injured Damian Priest here. This was a pretty gnarly brawl. I didn’t care for the finish, as Dain fell on top of Dunne after Dunne put a second rope sleeper on him at 11:10 (shown). What was Dunne expecting would happen? Why are they cooling off Dunne? I clearly have many questions. ***¼
Dakota Kai calls Rhea Ripley dense. She doesn’t care that Ripley wants to be a savior, and she’s taking her out just like she took out Mia Yim.
The Undisputed Era comes out for a chat without Bobby Fish. They’re pretty hot at Keith Lee for injuring Fish, and they want answers from Finn Balor about why he attacked Adam Cole. Lee comes out and brags about sending Cole into the audience last week. He wonders which of their titles he’ll take. They attack but he fights them off. Cole nails but Tommaso Ciampa comes out and attacks him.
Shayna Baszler def. Xia Li
Baszler won this one in 4:07 with the Kirafuda Clutch. This was fine, as Li needs more time before she can start competing with the top dogs in the division. She looked pretty good here though, and held her own for a couple of minutes before falling. **½
Kassius Ohno calls himself the best British wrestler alive, since he’s had a career renaissance in NXT UK. He’s here to preview World’s Collide and see if anyone in NXT can hang.
Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler def. León Ruff & Adrian Alanis
Ruff & Alanis are pushed as an EVOLVE tag team, which kind of blows my mind. The word Skulk is sort of mentioned too. The Forgotten sons win in 1:19 with the Memory Remains. Ryker chokeslams Ruff on the apron after the match. N/A
Dakota Kai’s entrance video is now footage of her attack on Tegan Nox. That’s cool. Rhea Ripley then concedes her match to Yim because one good set up deserves another. There was a referee but this never became a match. This was a smart move, as it makes Ripley look clever and it avoids having to job either the rocket-strapped Ripley or the ascending heel Kai. Kai and Yim fight to the back, and the Horsewomen come out for Ripley. Ripley almost fights them off, but after many attempts Baszler eventually puts her out with the Kirafuda Clutch (and help from her lackeys). That both made the Horsewomen look like dicks and made Ripley look tough as hell for lasting so long. Baszler tells Ripley she can have a title match in two weeks.
Balor says he’s playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. He calls checkmate on Cole… but wouldn’t checkmate be winning the title? Checkmate means the game is done dude, and you haven’t really done anything yet. If Johnny Gargano doesn’t cost Balor the title then what’s this all been about, man?!
Matt Riddle def. Kassius Ohno
This was more on par with their New Years match than it was their Phoenix match, but it’s not really a fair comparison as Phoenix had over 10,000 screaming fans watching it. I think Ohno got a little too much here, as he’s a midcard force in UK while Riddle is one of the most popular wrestlers on this brand. Riddle won in 9:18 (shown) with the Bro Derek. ***¼
Kushida def. Cameron Grimes
Grimes hit the Cave In on Raul Mendoza on the ramp and took the match from him. It was a pretty cool visual, and more effective than his swamp pontificating. This was a fun little sprint. Kushida won at 4:16 with a roll up. **½
Next week we’ll get a Cruiserweight title rematch between Lio Rush and Angel Garza. This has been a sneaky good feud. Sadly it’s been sneaky because they haven’t devoted enough TV time to it and most has happened on online exclusive videos. Yim and Kai will also fight for real next week.
Keith Lee, Tommaso Ciampa & Dominic Dijakovic def. Adam Cole, Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly
Beth Phoenix makes fun of Strong for calling Dijakovic a dork, but that’s basically my favorite thing that Strong does now. So this match was a ton of fun, and then continued to make Lee the biggest star in NXT with its finish. Balor ran in and took out the referee, Cole, and Ciampa. Then Lee became the first guy to really get over on Balor when he hit the Spirit Bomb on him. And THEN Lee pinned Cole with the Supernova to win the match at 9:19 (shown). ***¾
NXT General Manager William Regal announces that in two weeks, Cole will defend his title (big episode in two weeks), so next week they’ll determine the challenger in a triple threat match featuring Balor, Ciampa, and Lee.
