November 27, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida
Josiah Williams starts the show, looking like a little kid, and brings out the NXT roster to celebrate the fact that they won the night at Survivor Series. I try hard to see if Kushida has a brace on his hand because I just want to know if he’s coming back soon. It’s kind of a cool and different way for the show to start. The Undisputed Era interrupts the party and berates the roster and the crowd from the ramp. The crowd, for the first time ever I think, turns on the Undisputed Era. Team Ciampa (with Matt Riddle in the place of Kevin Owens, who is decidedly not back in NXT) gets in the ring to stare them down. Tommaso Ciampa calls WarJames the beginning of the end of the Undisputed Era. Keith Lee & Dominik Dijakovic will challenge for the tag titles tonight and Ciampa has his focus back on the NXT title. Finn Balor comes out and says he’d like the title as well, so it will be Ciampa vs. Balor tonight in a match that was more or less promised two months ago. To wrap up, Lee wants his title match right now.
Roderick & Kyle O’Reilly def. Keith Lee & Dominik Dijakovic {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Bobby Fish got injured within the first couple of minutes of the match, so during the match Strong-in-jeans took his place. They were lucky for the sake of TV that Strong’s being there makes sense, but the unfortunate injury killed the crowd for a while. Lee & Dijakovic didn’t seem to be quite on the same page early on, but they were enough on the same page to do some wild tandem offense. The story was the obvious one of Undisputed Era’s experience as a team against Lee & Dijakovic’s mass. My favorite part of the match was a high-pitched, little kid voice getting a few chants started. Another favorite was Lee Pouncing Cole into the crowd. Sadly, that Pounce left Dijakovic open to be hit by the Total Elimination at 16:58 (shown of 20:16). I might have called an audible after the injury and done the title change here. ***½
Candice LeRae is all riled up over Dakota Kai’s assault on Tegan Nox. She’s going to get some revenge tonight.
Mansoor def. Shane Thorne
They hyped up Mansoor’s Saudi wins before the match, making the finish something of a foregone conclusion. This was a fun little spring that Mansoor won in 3:04 with a slingshot neckbreaker. **½
Candice LeRae def. Dakota Kai
I think they should stop announcing “the following contest, scheduled for one fall, is a women’s division match.” They don’t do it for the men, which makes the whole thing odd. Kai has new, heel music and comes out holding Nox’s knee brace. This started off a bit iffy, but they got it together and put on a great, dramatic match. Kai was more aggressive, but still couldn’t put LeRae away. Kai tried to cheat a few times and failed, and when she finally was able to smack LeRae with the knee brace she was disqualified at 9:06 (shown of 12:29). Kai tried to attack LeRae with a chair after the match but Rhea Ripley made the save. ***½
Cameron Grimes hangs out by a swamp. He talks about resenting the fan favorites in NXT in light of his quickest win in NXT history. He’s going to cave in the competition. Why is Cave In his finisher name when he’s associated with weird clothes and swamps?
Lio Rush def. Akira Tozawa {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
They recapped all of the issues between Rush & Angel Garza earlier… so a notorious jobber from a different brand gets a second shot at Rush’s title in 4 days? I feel bad for complaining about eight minutes into this thing when these guys start moving faster than the speed of sound, bobbing around each other like nothing I’ve ever seen. And they don’t even end their stretches of action with stupid poses. Will Ospreay would have you believe that isn’t possible. This was the best Tozawa match I’ve seen in forever, and Rush should be commended for being so consistently great on this show. Rush hit a pair of Final Hours for the win at 9:46 (shown of 13:06). ****
Xia Li def. Vanessa Borne
When Li made her entrance, I was worried they’d shove her out there against Aliyah again. I can’t say that Borne is that much of an upgrade, but at least we know her job extends to actual wrestling still. Li wins in 1:10 with a spin kick after totally dominating. The Horsewomen come out and attack. Li is able to fight them off for quite a while, but she goes down eventually. Shayna Baszler gets on the mic to brag about winning the main event at Survivor Series. The crowd chants for Ripley, who wastes little time coming out and heading straight into the ring. She congratulates Baszler for her Survivor Series win and then runs her WarJanes win in her face. She wants Baszler’s title. Baszler leaves rather than fight Ripley now. Oh right, there’d been a match… just a squash. N/A
Damian Priest and Killian Dain will fight each other one-on-one next week. They show Priest reacting to having cracked ribs from that match… but he sure seemed fine when he fought at Survivor Series. Lazy.
Finn Balor def. Tommaso Ciampa
It seems like it would have been logical to have this be a contender match, and to have Johnny Gargano show up to cost Balor his shot. Maybe Gargano is still too injured to play. After a good match, but one that didn’t ramp up to that special place that I think these two are capable of, Cole ran down and attacked Ciampa, allowing Balor to hit the 1916 for the win at 9:04 (shown of 11:33). After the match, Balor attacks Cole. This heel vs. kind-of-a-heel feud should be able to take us through January, but the goal should still be getting the belt on Ciampa at Takeover in Portland. ***¼
