NXT UK 68

October 31, 2019 – Brentwood, Essex

Rhea Ripley & Piper Niven def. Jinny & Jazzy Gabert
Ripley must be exhausted, going from doing two segments in Orlando the night before, to flying directly to the UK for this match so early in the morning. Also her hair is somehow longer here than it was the night before. Go figure. This was fun. Ripley and Niven more or less ran roughshod on the heels, and it was a blast to see them do it. Niven hit the Michinoku Driver on Gabert for the win at 6:05. I have to wonder why they aren’t building Gabert up as a bigger threat, but that doesn’t take away from this match on its face. ***¼

A-Kid def. Kassius Ohno
A-Kid won this one by countout at 6:38. The match was interesting leading up to that finish, but the end and the bulk of the thing felt pretty disconnected. Ohno beats up A-Kid after the match until Tyler Bate makes the save. I like this dual role that Ohno plays in NXT UK, where he’s a gatekeeper for newbies and also the American who tries to out-British the British. Curious to see where this goes. **¾

Killer Kelly is medically cleared and ready to return. So she’s picking a fight with so she can get a match on TV. She attacks Isla Dawn off-screen, presumably.

Joseph Connors def. Roy Johnson
I can’t decide what’s worse, Johnson’s nickname or Conner’s jacket. Yes I can, it’s the jacket. It looks like something out of the Mario Bros movie. Anyway, this was going along fine until the final few seconds, when it became clear Conners was going to win again, which is a thing that nobody wants. Conners isn’t going to happen, stop trying to make Conners happen. He won in 4:04 with Don’t Look Down. N/A

Kay Lee Ray comes to the ring to talk about how happy she is to be champion, mostly because it deprives Toni Storm of being champion. She finds it amusing that Xia Brookside has been calling her out. Brookside thinks that KLR cheated in the battle royal at the Download festival, but KLR thinks she’s just smart. Next, Gallus cuts a promo outside, threatening Imperium. Next week, Joe Coffey will return to the ring. Also next week, the Grizzled Young Veterans will fight Flash Mandrews.

Jordan Devlin def. Dave Mastiff
As much as I dislike Conners, I like Devlin and Mastiff. Mastiff especially impresses me every time out. He does things that a guy his size really shouldn’t, and his stamina is pretty incredible all things considered. Devlin is a wrestling savante, putting a fantastic performance on around the big man, using every opportunity to stay alive until finally dragging Mastiff off the turnbuckle and hitting the Devlin Side for the win at 12:04. I’m willing to guess that this is better than anything that will be on Crown Jewel later today. ***¾

The show ends with a confrontation between Ilja Dragunov and Alexander Wolfe. Wolfe’s light flirtation has turned into something more sinister, and Dragunov is now involved in a prison gang situation wherein he can either join Imperium or die. Dragunov seems very torn.
