Poppy plays a song on the ramp while a recap of last week’s show plays on the big screen. That’s… different. Then she plays Io Shirai to the ring, which makes sense since they’re both weird and they’ve been associated with each other in the past.
Io Shirai def. Candice LeRae
While not quite as epic as their Takeover match, this was pretty dope on its own merits. LeRae fought rather desperately, having already lost to Shirai. She went as far as to hit Johnny Gargano’s Hurts Donut, but then got baited into hitting her finisher on a chair and got pinned at 9:20 (shown). Rhea Ripley saves LeRae from a chair attack after the match, getting revenge for Shirai’s interference the week before. NXT’s women’s division be wild. ***½
Finn Balor comes out to address his actions from last week. He does so in the dark with a spotlight on him. The most heelish thing he does is refraining from throwing his arms in the air to the tune of his entrance music. He complains about jobbing to the Fiend and says that he’s revealed his true self now. He says that if Johnny Gargano steps to him, he’ll turn him from Johnny Wrestling to Johnny Watches Wrestling. That’s a dope threat.
Bronson Reed def. Shane Thorne
Do you want to watch a couple of Aussie blokes beat the piss out of each other for a few minutes? Give this one a look. These two old buddies clearly trust each other a lot, and Thorne put over Reed huge here. The big man tossed Thorne around like a rag doll after a heated chop battle. This fun little bop ended in 4:22 after Reed hit a goddamn Superfly Splash. That’s how you make the most out of a short amount of time. ***¼
Asuka & Kairi Sane def. Tegan Nox & Dakota Kai {WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match}
Kind of surprised this wasn’t the main event, but then these titles haven’t been treated well at all to date. Heel Sane is creepier than heel Shirai and I still love her so, though it’s a little telling that every Japanese woman who turns heel must wear black. Anyway, this dragged a bit. While I appreciate that they gave the top-of-the-hour slot and understand that they were trying to showcase their superior women’s division, I don’t think the match merited it’s length and going through two commercial breaks. The bulk of the match was the Kabuki Warriors toying with Kai, and while they effectively made it clear that their arrogance was the story, it wasn’t a very exciting story. It just went on for way too long without any hope spots. Once Nox finally tagged in, things picked up in a big way. Imagine how good this match could have been had the heel control portion been more dynamic. The champs won when Asuka misted Kai, hit a roundhouse kick, and then tagged in Sane who hit the Insane Elbow (and hid Kai’s misted face) at 17:18 (shown, over twenty minutes for the live crowd). ***
After the match, the Horsewomen come out and beat up Team Kick until Ripley interrupts. Shirai and Bianca Belair attack Ripley before she can get to the ring. LeRae gets involved and the whole thing ends in a giant brawls NXT General Manager William Regal comes out and announces that WarJames this year will be for the ladies. I guess that makes it WarJanes. We don’t know exactly who is in it yet, but it’s some iteration of Team Kick, Ripley & LeRae vs. Belair, Shirai & two of the Horsewomen, presumably.
Cameron Grimes def. Tyler Bate
Yeah so this was dope. Grimes is on a roll, though being paired with the level of talent he’s been paired with certainly doesn’t hurt. After a really fun match filled with all kinds of cool counters, the finish was kind of bogus as Killian Dain distracted Bate, leading to Grimes hitting the Cave in at 9:40 (shown). Dain beats up Bate after the match to send a message to Pete Dunne. ***½
Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly def. Keith Lee & Matt Riddle
This was terrific. Lee and Riddle wowed the crowd with their wild offended while the Undisputed Era kicked the crap out of both of them every chance they could. The UE interference that led to the finish here was a lot more effective than in the previous match because it allowed the babyfaces to look really strong rather than stupid. In the end though, the tag champs caught Riddle with Total Elimination at 11:53. After the match, Tommaso Ciampa helps stave off the Undisputed Era and more or less announces that there will be a men’s WarJames after all. ****
