EVOLVE 138

October 12, 2019 – Concord, North Carolina

Shotzi Blackheart def. Savannah Evans
This was a strange choice for an opener, as it was short and largely punchy-kicky. It picked up some in the final minutes, when Blackheart tried to use kicks to bring down the bigger Evans, and Evans started doing more than punch. Blackheart picked up the win with Shadows Over Hell at 5:30. **¼

Babatunde def. Sean Maluta
Eddie Kingston was on commentary for this match while Colby Corino pestered Babatunde at ringside. Babatunde seemed more comfortable in the ring with Maluta than he did with Kingston the night before. Maluta bounced around the ring to cover up for Babatunde’s limitations more than the larger Kingston did. After taking a lot of offense from Maluta (with Corino’s help), Babatunde came back with a toss, a chop, and a splash for the win at 5:03. **

Arturo Ruas def. Anthony Gutierrez
Their last match was pretty much all on the mat, and with an extra couple of minutes here they incorporated more strikes and a couple of flips. Some of the magic was lost in an attempt to make this more of a traditional wrestling match (though still an unmistakably MMA-inspired one). That said, you can’t deny that these two have good chemistry. Ruas got the win with a rear naked choke at 6:51. **¾

Kassius Ohno def. Curt Stallion
What a surprise, Ohno has a match that’s too long and quite boring in EVOLVE. He also cut a snooze of a promo before the match, asking his protege Harlem Bravado to wear a Duke jersey (which is bad for some reason). Don’t explain it to me, I don’t care. I just have no interest in watching Ohno in an environment like this, where the crowd is small and uninterested in this kind of match which makes the slow pace over such long stretches even more brutal. The molasses drip of the match is even more glaring in the face of the Ruas/Gutierrez matches, which are quick and efficient and get done what they need to get done in seven minutes or less. What’s worse is that after fifteen minutes of total snooze, Bravado got involved (taking friendly fire) in a moment that led directly to Ohno getting the win at 16:28 with the Kassius Clutch. So all that crap on the mat led to absolutely nothing as the match changed into something else in the final thirty seconds. I hated this. Ohno’s 2019 EVOLVE run was real bad. ¾*

Cameron Grimes def. Eddie Kingston
This was a perfectly acceptable back-and-forth match. They did enough to get the crowd to care, aided in large part to the fans being very excited to cheer on their hometown boy Grimes. Grimes won in 9:29 with the Cave In. **½

AR Fox & Leon Ruff def. Austin Theory & Anthony Greene {EVOLVE Tag Team Championship Match}
These guys had really big intentions for this match, and they executed a lot of them well (and a few of them not so well). The match was mostly exciting, with the Skulk trying to win through high-flying antics and the baddies cheating as baddies do in a tag match. Theory’s overselling and some of the over-complicated spot setups gave this an indie sheen, but I can almost ignore that because of the way Ruff continued to sell his injuries doing his post-match dance celebration. Fox pinned Theory with the 450 Splash in 15:26. ***¼
