Adam Cole def. Matt Riddle {NXT Championship Match}
Cole came into this one with a broken bone in his wrist after Riddle caught him in an armbar last week. It didn’t really come into play during the match, as they worked more of a balls to the wall type of match and Cole only sold the injury when it was convenient. I’d say this was about on par with their previous, underrated match. It was similarly wild in its Takeover-esque style, though it lacked some of the nuances that grace those arena matches. In the end, Cole used the cast to thwart Riddle’s momentum and hit the Last Shot to pick up the win at 13:49. Finn Balor comes out after the match and lets Cole know that he’s now in NXT. ****¼
Velveteen Dream comes out to say that he wants the NXT North American Championship back, and he’s not afraid of taking on the rest of the Undisputed Era too. He challenges Strong to step out of the shadow of his crew.
Io Shirai def. Mia Yim
If Shirai wasn’t stoned while working this match then the world is upside down because she was so out of this at points that there’s no way she was sober. Yim seemed to be literally carrying this at points, which is the opposite of what you’d expect. They got this together into something quite fun in the second half, so there’s that. Where was this energy from Yim at Takeover XXV?! Shirai hit a perfect moonsault after 14:46 for the win. ***½
Johnny Gargano def. Shane Thorne
Hey, Shane Thorne is neat. Push Shane Thorne. He did great here, keeping up with Gargano in another Takeover style match, if a slightly shorter version of one. Gargano hit a thrust kick at 8:57 for the win after a really good showing from the Australian. I need for this not to be the last we see of Thorne in a significant role. ***¾
Shayna Baszler def. Candice LeRae {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
I thought this was going to be the main event, but then Baszler won in 14:45 with the Kirafuda Clutch and it became clear why this didn’t end the show. It’s a shame that so much of this happened during the screen-in-screen commercial breaks, because the action was quite good and LeRae got a couple of really convincing near-falls. ***½
Pete Dunne def. Danny Burch
This was squishier than Dunne’s matches from previous weeks, but that’s mostly because a lot of Burch’s offense happened during the break. Given it’s spot in the show, I didn’t think this would be the banger that their NXT UK match would be, but it was still a nice little breezy bout. Damien Priest attacked Dunne after the match to give both of them some direction. Dunne hit the Bitter End at 7:14 to win the thing. ***
Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly def. Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Wale raps the Street Profits to the ring. This was better than their last match but not as good as the Takeover match. There’s not a lot to differentiate the three matches, so if you’re into Ford flying, Dawkins punching and spearing, and the Undisputed Era doing their hitting and cheating thing then you’ll dig this. Strong ran out and baited Dawkins into spearing him on the apron, which left Ford vulnerable to fall victim to the Total Elimination at 20:03. After the match, Strong celebrates with the tag champs in the ring while Cole comes out to the ramp to throw up his title belt too. Then Tommaso Ciampa comes out and stares the champ down. I am so happy. ***½
